These old Saab Turbos are one part of a standing rotation of vehicles I’d consider as a possible future project car. The trouble is, they’re extremely hard to find and even more difficult to track down – and afford – when they’re in the top-flight condition like this example, a 1978 99 Turbo here on eBay. Thanks to Barn Finds reader Jim S. for the find.
By the time the 99 Turbo was introduced, Saab had already established a successful track record for building vehicles that could compete and win in competitive driving events. Durability and handling were among their strong suits, just one aspect of why they could be found tearing up gravel on rally stages. This super clean Turbo is owned by a long-time Saab enthusiast and shop owner, who bought it from the second owner in 1983.
In addition to its preserved condition and multiple upgrades including European headlights, multiple European-market engine upgrades, Recaro-style bucket seats, OEM Inca wheels, bigger sway bars and Koni shocks, this auction also includes two parts car Saabs, including a second Turbo model and a ’78 EMS. The seller only wants these to go as part of a package deal, so you can’t pick and choose your favorites.
The clamshell hood is one of my favorite parts of owning a late-80’s BMW and the same rule applies here. Saabs don’t have the best reputation for ease of maintenance, but the driving experience is said to make up for it. The black 99 Turbo is quite a specimen that has clearly been loved and upgraded sensibly, and the inclusion of two rather complete-looking parts cars serve to emphasize the seller’s obsession with these sporting Swedes. The buy-it-now is $16,900, but no takers yet.
Ick!
Love those seats!
Agreed!
If it’s a package deal, it’s a very good buy for someone.
Agreed part ii
That’s a hell of a lot of money, even for two of em!
I could get some pretty nice cars for even half of that!
Very nice, not that far away, want one bad …..only one small problem: I’m about $16,800 short.
Maybe I should unsubscribe and save the agony :)
Great cars, one of my bucket list cars to own. The black one is the nicest one in the bunch but with a tired carpet, incorrect seats, intermittent odometer, etc. it doesn’t really justify the other two “parts cars”. And at this price, “these are not the droids you are looking for”
I’d love to add this to the stable! Lots to like and still some stuff to fart around with making it distinctly yours.
Just remember that unless its had a later/modern turbocharger fitted that you will meet a friend who we all hoped had been left in 70/80s Performance TURBO vehicles, MR. LAAAAAAG. Push pedal to floor & count to 3 before any increase in momentum is noticeable!
