Mercedes-Benz cars modified in-period in the 1980s are typically some of the more memorable rides from that era. The bodykits, wide wheels, and upgraded sound systems were all part of the playbook for driving a car that was “hooked up” in every sense of the word. One of the best platforms for such custom touches was the W126-series cars in either coupe or sedan form. Either model looked ridiculously good lowered on fat BBS wheels with big front air dams, side skirts, and rear valences. This particular 500SEC is notable for all of those reasons as well as for being featured in a Twilight Zone episode called “The Soul Collector.” Find the car here on craigslist for $25,000 in Manhattan Beach.
Now, I usually rank the stereo system in second or third place below the other styling and mechanical upgrades these cars tend to get. But I cannot ignore just how amazing this Mercedes is inside when it comes to the audio equipment. It features a Clarion G80 sound system with a unique AMG eight-speaker rear shelf system. The seller has removed all of these components and restored each one, likely for a cost that by itself is more than three of my project cars put together. The work entailed bench testing, making any necessary repairs, and performing a custom Bluetooth install. The rear AMG speaker system was also removed, with original speakers re-wired and the correct OEM cloth procured to recover the enclosure.
Of course, that’s not all with a car like this. The seller notes the automatic transmission was removed and rebuilt, and a brake service was performed. There’s also a “major service” listed with no details as to what the repair consisted of. The seller has also addressed numerous other nagging issues, from replacing broken lenses to removing and replacing the cracked dashboard. The tires are new and there’s also a replacement A/C compressor to keep you cool inside (like you needed any help with a car like this). The listing also mentions that the vacuum-assist door lock system has been fully serviced and is working properly again and the seat belt tensioners have been repaired.
The seller notes that he purchased the Mercedes from the original owner’s family. Presumably, that individual passed away, and the Mercedes was sold with some of the classic signs of neglect still present. The fog lights and headlight glass were all replaced (and on cars like these with the European headlamps, that’s no small thing) as were all of the bulbs in the center stack. Mileage is listed as being 160,000, so this 500SEC was actually driven after its stint on The Twilight Zone concluded. This is a very slick entry into any Radwood show you wish, and as an added bonus, that higher mileage means you won’t be as scared to actually drive it to the venue! Thanks to Barn Finds reader Pat L. for the find.
This is a tough one to place a value on. AMG body kit and interior appointments plus celebrity status on a car with 160K with additional needs. If you remove the celebrity component from the discussion you have a nice 80’s icon that will need more work judging by the oily underside. A euro 500SEC with the euro wipers and headlights is also more desirable than the US counterpart. It’s the 160K miles big white elephant in the room that is going to hold this car back. The C126 really holds its valve when mileage is below 80K and that value goes up significantly for even lower mileage examples. No doubt the seller has sunk their heart and soul into this and have probably run out of time and funds to continue. Or they discovered they are upside down in the investment just like me with my 86 C126 560. Expenses really add up with these and with mine having 135K on it I have approached the limit of this cars worth and I’m still going.
alphasud said it all. Good looking car but where do you stop?

Um, the Twilight Zone car had a white interior.
Just like every coke dealer’s 500/560 SEC in Miami in the mid ’80s.
Here’s a first: Undercarriage photos included, but none of the interior except for the stereo stack.
What a hideous interior, I would hate to look at the steering wheel for very long.
If I remember rightly, the seat belts were “handed ” to you by the inner mouth from the “Alien” franchise?
It’s all about $$…
I had a black one with the “factory” AMG Ronal five spoke wheels in black to match the car…Awesome car…
