Unlikely Off-Roader: 1977 AMC Pacer 4×4

Now, we are not suggesting that anyone buy this. We do want to explore the strange phenomenon that has been spreading across the country though. The practice has been going on for years now and we have yet to hear the name for it. Seemingly intelligent men take a normal passenger car and cram a four-wheel-drive chassis under it. Some get the job done, but most don’t. This one falls in the later category and it is listed here on craigslist for $1,300.

This isn’t the first 4×4 converted car we have featured. Last year we found a Gremlin that actually turned out pretty cool. This Pacer wagon doesn’t have the look yet, but there is a Blazer chassis under it. Get the stance right, finish hooking everything up, and you will have one heck of a unique rock crawler. Just think of the looks on all the Jeep guy’s faces when you show at the trails this summer! Now, if we could just come up with a name for this odd genre of customizing…

Not sure what the name should be, but pretty sure it should contain the word “Bubba”…

“If your grandmother buys a new house and you have to come over and take the wheels off, you might be a redneck.”

“If your family tree does not fork, you might be a redneck.”

“If your mother does not remove the Marlboro cigarette from her mouth before telling the state trooper to kiss her ass, you might be a redneck.”

    Sorry. Slow day for me.

Just when you thought that an AMC Pacer could not look any crappier!
Jesse you’ve been very busy at the computer this weekend. I thought that you would be polishing up that new Corvette of yours. You can’t go wrong with a set of Hooker headers!

I love this car. Its for me i know you guys don’t like it. And living in Florida we have a lot of rain and we need lifted car’s so we can make it out before we get flooded

I’m in Florida too Alex. Not only is this car good for the flooded streets, but you could drive right over top the 20-yr olds with their crappy lowered Hondas with the lawnmower exhaust can! Braaaaaaaaaap! Love to see their faces at the light,

I think this is really cool. If you think this is boring, I’d like to see the vehicle YOU drive. 1st of all, Pacers, especially wagons, are cool, and where I live( Colorado) 4×4’s are all the rage, and truly needed. I’m finding out, the back hills roads, paths really, are no place for a 2 wheel drive pickup. Apparently, there’s more where this idea came from. ( the author misnamed the Plymouth as a Pontiac)

Howard I really liked the Plymouth/Pontiac / The Fairlane / Chevy truck and the fire truck but I thought I would have a heart failure when I saw they did a Corvette split window and the Smart car just made me laugh. Thanks for sharing the link. Now as far as the Pacer it’s cool but if he didn’t finish it there is either a problem he didn’t expect or can’t figure it out or the wife who has no love for creativity said get that POS out of here.

Once you opened that hatchback – um.. how do you close it?

“This inginerin stuff is harder than it looks!”

    • Bravocharleywindsor

Simple! Tie a piece of rope to it that hangs down low enough to pull the hatch down until you can push it closed.

      PLUS…

If you prop the hatch open with a length of 2×4, you can use the same piece of rope to hang your deer from!!

      See, simple!

Just don’t ask me how I know these kinds of things!

I quite like it. Take two old shagged cars/trucks and make one weirdo out of the bits. Don’t like the front end/sticky-out chassis much, but that could be disguised.

There used to be a Citroen Dyane on a Hi-lux chassis in Kirkcaldy, dunno if it’s still there.

Aw, don’t be a buzzkill. Barn Finds covers the entire gamut, Yugo’s to Pierce-Arrows, and everything in between (haven’t seen any boats or fighter jets in awhile, tho) One of my best friends is a writer here, and I haven’t found a cooler site.

the reason the 4wd isn’t hooked up is because as stated needs 4 wheel drive transmission

I’ve got appreciation for any vehicle somebody modifies themselves in their garage or back yard. Not sure I’d want to buy one from an unknown source though, at least not someone without a reputation for doing things in a reasonably sane manner. Have seen these types of rigs with nothing more than a few bolts holding the body on, I’ll definitely have a beer with the builder but will pass on going for a ride.

    Call it the Anti-Tesla.

Looks like a Mars rover from a ’50s TV show. Not my cup of tea, and I’m surprised by the number of these hillbilly hybrids that pop up.

On a similar silly note, back in high school my buddies and I bolted a Pinto wagon onto a International Scout chassis. Worked great until the cops pulled us over for no lights, no turn signals no brake lights etc.. he made us demonstrate the lack of every safety feature and then impounded the vehicle.. California cops..

Back in the day I remember them being referred to in the 4×4 magazines as 4xFreaks……pretty appropriate, in my opinion.😉

Sometimes I like a remake better than an original. Hmmm… Husker Du with “Love is all around,” Me First and the Gimmies with “Wild World,” The Lemmonheads and “Mrs. Robinson,” etc.

This Pacer remake is better than the original.

I like the 4xFreak idea but the split window ‘Vette is just not right. Would be a good father & son project and it doesn’t have to turn out nice. Just good times and a bit of learning.

OK! First of all, this is (in my opinion) the best use of a Pacer wagon that I have ever seen! The car has been improved even if it is not driveable!

Second! To each his own! My father always said that if we were all the same in our likes. We would all be in the same place at the same time. Then the world would stop rotating caused by a very lopsided condition! Besides, wait until you see what I do to my wife’s Mazda Tribute (Ford Escape with a different name) That scattered it’s engine yesterday with no warning at 75MPH!

And third (and I’m sure not least) THE official name (I declare it!) for vehicles changed to lifted 4X4s is—— BAMA CRUISERS!

    Yu’all is wellCome!

Too bad that it is on a Blazer chassis. Would need to be all AMC/Jeep to be original.
