Jeep knows a thing or two about special editions and trim packages, maybe more than most vehicle makers. The Cherokee had no less than a dozen different factory trim levels or packages that a buyer could check on the order sheet. This 1998 Jeep Cherokee Limited has the Up Country Suspension Group off-road package. It can be found here on eBay in Greenville, South Carolina and the bidders have jacked up the price to $9,600 with just a day left.
It’s hard to argue with really anything about this Jeep for me. The condition looks just outstanding, it’s pretty much loaded to the gills with options, and the color, or tone, is what a lot of people want. Black looks great on most vehicles if it’s whistle-clean which this one is. Having the added off-road package just makes it even better. Although, it’s almost too nice to take off of a paved road, maybe this is when SUVs started to be more show than go? As in, they’re capable enough but most people don’t use them for anything but groceries, picking up the kids, and regular freeway commuting. Rugged looks for rugged looks’ sake, but not for any pragmatic, useful off-road reason. Thoughts?
The Vehicle History Report shows one slight fender-bender three years ago on the left rear that did “no or minor damage”. I would argue that nobody would have ever noticed that and most sellers don’t include the vehicle history report so kudos the seller for being upfront and including that in their listing. In my world, that’s a good sign. I know, any really serious buyer would run a CarFax report, but I don’t know if most buyers do that, I don’t typically do that if the photos and description show a good looking vehicle. Do most of you pay for a vehicle history report of some kind when buying a vehicle online?
The interior looks almost like new, the leather seats are beautiful both in the front and in the rear. The AC works great as does everything else inside. The rear cargo area looks unused and the underside looks rock-solid. The Up Country Suspension Group package was for 4WD models only and it reportedly added about a one-inch lift kit, tow hooks on the front and rear, a Trak-Loc limited-slip differential, and steel skid plates on the transfer case, fuel tank, and front suspension.
The engine is Jeep’s famous 4.0L inline-six with just under 200-horsepower. This Jeep is rust-free, has no leaks, and almost looks like new. Have any of you heard of the Up Country Suspension Group package?
This design is ageless change my mind
Look at that cargo area, LOL!! Did they cover it in Seran wrap and only put things back there which were soft edged and totally devoid of dirt and loose particles? My hot hatch’s cargo area looks more used than this and its a 2020 model with less 6,000 miles on it. And it isn’t like I don’t take care of my cars.
Anyway, guess I never got the concept of minty trucks. But this one is very well maintained and beautiful. I’d be afraid to use it, but it’s good it exists.
It’s a nice, solid truck with a timeless design that seems to get better with age. That said, prices are really high on these. You can get a lot nicer trucks than this for $10k. I looked at one of these recently and was surprised how small it is in person. The back doors are tiny and it’s very cramped. For the same 16 mpg I’ll take a V8 pickup over this.
I always liked these but agree that the interior feels cramped. A woman I worked with in the ’90s bought one new and invited me to drive it. I’m 6′, 200 lbs. and I could not get comfortable in the drivers seat. It just felt too small for me. But, I still like ’em and always get tempted to stop and check when I see one for sale.
Looks like a beauty. I had a 99 Limited that I let go for short money 8 years ago. I can’t Believe how high priced these are already. I should have put mine on ice for a few years.
The spare tire In The cargo area is often in the way when hauling larger items and the lack of a split rear seat can sometimes be more frustrating than I would have ever imagined.
As for this one the drivers seat side bolster shows signs of repair along the seam near the power seat switches. The leather falls apart In That spot long before 100k. This truck has 134k and mine started showing its demons around 150k. Electrical gremlins, cooling system problems and lots of rattling bits falling apart. The entire AC system was overhauled before 100k. Mine was a daily for ten years and we parted on good terms at 170k. This one looks well loved. GLWTS
The holy grail of XJs along with the rare-ish 5-speed models. These are indestructible and very capable off road. Mine has 225k miles and is as solid as new, but I take meticulous care of it. That said, these will take lots of abuse and neglect and still run reliably.
This is a $20k+ truck
It’s just over 10k now with 9 hours left. Maybe there’ll be a late surge but I think the mileage will keep it below 12k. But, if Bring a Trailer would take it, it may get close to 20.
I had a ’98’ Cherokee Sport. Bought it used and it ran, and ran, and ran, until a buddy of mine asked to buy it and it ran for him as well.
Then it was stolen from him !!!
A great car !!

Winning bid:US $13,700.00[ 43 bids ]
Did the 1998 mentioned in this article have a winning bid of $13,700 or are you talking about a different vehicle?
I believe I’m a victim of a scam. I recently paid for this exact jeep with giftcards to ebay. After paying them $1800 for the jeep plus an additional $800 for shipping insurance that they said was fully refundable once the vehicle arrived at my house. I’m pretty sure I just lost $2600 for nothing. Now I feel like a complete idiot.
