We featured this car last week here on Barn Finds and it sold Saturday night at Barrett-Jackson. The car brought a winning bid of just shy of $400,000, which includes the buyer’s premium of 10%. However, the star of the night was Carroll Shelby’s personal Super Snake which sold for an amazing price of $5.5 million!
Original article: Historically significant Shelbys have come into the spotlight recently including a 1966 GT350 prototype which sold for over $600,000 and two others that recently sold for over $3 million each. If you missed any of those, another Shelby prototype is up for sale at this month’s Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale, Arizona. It can be found here on Barrett-Jackson.com and the sky is the limit for the value of this car. Will it break the all-time record for a Shelby Mustang of $3.5 million? Take a closer look at this ultra-rare Mustang and thanks to our Barn Finds colleague Adam for the tip on this beautiful car.
So what makes this car so rare and valuable? It is one of only two cars made that feature a Conelec fuel injection system that feeds air and fuel into the massive 428 cubic inch Cobra Jet engine. While fuel injection in some form had been used before, it still wasn’t very common in 1968. In fact, fuel-injected Mustangs wouldn’t be mass-produced until almost two decades later. Power for this Mustang is transferred to a C6 automatic transmission with a “special torque-sensitive, locking rear axle.”
At first glance, the interior looks like a standard Shelby Mustang, however, there are a few special parts in this one. It features factory hand-made fiberglass parts along with a pre-production console and special sound-deadener.
The car has undergone a “fully documented concours restoration” by a “noted Shelby historian.” As mentioned before, this is one of only two cars featuring the Conelec fuel injection and the only fastback that was made. The exterior features Sunlit Gold paint and pre-production taillights. Overall, this is another significant Shelby that will no doubt command strong bidding. How much do you think it will hammer for?
Overpriced
I recorded last night’s auction to watch today. In checking THE B-J website I see it sold for $396,000.00, so yes it is the “WINNAH AND STILL CHAMPEEN!!!
Somebody was expecting a lot more after an expensive restoration like this. I’m guessing 250k for the restoration.
Funny seeing a “restoration” cost of $250,000 on this type car. That’s the cost of a Duesenberg engine rebuild. Long since retired but routinely saw multi-million dollar CCCA Concours winning restorations coming through the shop. Clients expected 100 point Best of Show awards and paid dearly.
Question for Shelby Historians: It seems like every Barrett-Jackson and Mecum Auction for the last 5 years has featured a “personally owned by Carrol Shelby” or is a “prototype Shelby Cobra” Mustang or Cobra, that goes for big $$$ because “it’s a one-of-a-kind” whatever. Either these cars are being recycled often, or someone is doing an excellent job of cloning and marketing. I suspect the latter.
Pure curiosity …… Just where is Adam these days? I miss the bit of southern-hemisphere he always included in his reports..
Cheers
Sam
Another overpriced car that will never see the road again IMO.
So true if Carrol Shelbys name is on a car that means he owned it?
