Updated 4×4! 1965 International Travelall

Burly tires and suspension mods are just the beginning on this updated International. The 1965 International Harvester Travelall 1200C in Pittsford, New York spent most of its life in California, according to the seller, and after investing a reported $50,000 in this classic, they offer it for $25,000 (Buy It Now) or bidding here on eBay. All new wiring, Chevy 2500 axles, and a long list of fixes and upgrades have this “weekend driver” looking ready for adventure. With five days remaining as we go to press, the updated Travelall has harvested a single $10,000 bid, not enough to trigger the seller’s Reserve.

As you might expect from a company with “Harvester” in its name, form follows function on the Travelall’s dashboard. The seller lists “just three” issues:  seat upholstery, headliner, and the brake and hazard light circuits sometimes blow their fuses.

My Grandfather had one of these when I was a tot, and seeing this one triggers foggy early memories. We called it “The Green Monster.” His was also a 4×4 and it hauled its share of deer and towed their travel trailer and boat. This one features twin gas tanks (both re-sealed) and a host of new fuel system parts. The owner reportedly spares it from salt and snowy drives and it still looks rust-free despite its time in the Empire State.

The original 304 cid (5,0L) V8 makes good compression, according to the listing, and what looks like a Corvette-style power brake setup replace the single-pot original. Power steering makes a welcome addition for low-speed maneuvers with the 34.6 inch inch tires. A new clutch should have the four-speed manual gearbox ready for a second life.

This “before” picture shows the Travelall’s state pre-Resto-Mod. Most of these full-size 4×4 trucks served commercial purposes in their day while station wagons answered the call of suburban family hauling. Before we evolved to where anyone who gets three snowflakes a year needs four-wheel-drive, people blasted around all winter long with RWD and snow tires.

Hello in there! Whether hauling your family’s camping gear or a pack of Weimaraners, this Travelall’s got you covered. The aftermarket spare tire carrier houses a BBQ grille too! This classic comes with the seller’s cache of spare glass and other parts. Speaking of parts, the asking price may exceed the sum of the parts on this rig if the seller spent double that including labor. One thing’s for certain, this Travelall will be easier and cheaper to keep on the road than any full-sized SUV made after 2010, and I’d trust it even more off-road. Would you give up touch screens and adaptive cruise control for an adventure in this refurbished Travelall?

What did they spend $50,000 on?

I think the key being parts & labor. So I am thinking the owner didn’t do too much of the wrenching. Gets pretty expensive getting work done at a shop. Sad part is all shops are created equal. A though inspection would probably be wise. These are beasts in stock form. The dual tanks is a nice upgrade.

Hard “NO” at that asking price and non functional brake/ hazard lights and needing upholstery.

I’ve seen this listed before either on FB or BAT. Nice rig but still needs a ton of work to complete especially at that price point.

When you’re asking $25 large for your rig? Could you at least put the Horse blanket ON the tattered seats?

Lately, I’m seeing a lot of these trucks changing their axles out for GM versions. Interesting that this model already runs Dana axles. The only thing you might actually have to change would be hubs so you can update to 8-stud wheels. Having said that, there are an increasing number of options out there for the six stud units.

Getting to be more parts available. While the outside panels are still in the works, rockers, floor pans, hood hinge brackets are being produced. All door and window seals, headliners and even a new windshield are out there.

Overall, these aren’t a bad project to take on. I can think of worse.
