Upgraded Big-Block: 1974 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray

Most enthusiasts agree that by 1974, Chevrolet’s C3 Corvette Stingray was no longer the fire-breathing beast that established the badge’s high-performance credentials. The optional big-block was still pretty respectable, but this car’s second owner wanted more. Therefore, they performed an engine transplant, recapturing the C3’s glory days. It presents superbly, and I must say a big thank you to Barn Finder Tony P. for spotting the Stingray listed here on Craigslist in Concord, Massachusetts. The seller set their price for this brutal beast at $24,000.

After changes in 1973, Chevrolet performed further exterior upgrades to the C3 range for the 1974 model year. The most obvious, forced upon the company by legislative requirements, was the replacement of the chrome rear bumpers with an aluminum energy-absorbing system with a two-piece urethane cover. Some may disagree, but I actually quite like the update, because it gives the taillights an almost “frenched” appearance. The company continued to offer buyers ten paint shades, with this car finished in Code 68 Dark Brown Metallic. Some colors are very much “of their time,” as is the case with Dark Brown. It was offered by numerous manufacturers in multiple variations during the 1970s and early 1980s, but had virtually disappeared by the end of the decade. The seller states that the Corvette retains its original paint, and has been garage-kept throughout its life. Its presentation is extremely impressive for a survivor of this vintage. The paint retains a deep shine, and any cosmetic issues are too insignificant to show in the listing images. I can’t spot any fiberglass defects or evidence of frame or birdcage rust. The glass is crystal clear, and the Rally wheels and their bright enhancements are in good condition.

The first owner ordered this Corvette with the 454ci V8, a four-speed manual transmission, power steering, and power brakes. The 454 was still a pretty reasonable motor in 1974, delivering a factory-claimed 270hp and 380 ft/lbs of torque. This is where the Corvette’s story becomes interesting. Reportedly, the first owner sold the car to his brother, who was instantly disappointed by the performance from the LS4 big-block. Taking the bull by the horns, he ordered and fitted a factory LS5. Forget 270hp, because he then had 425hp to play with. The C3 was a brutal car in its early days, and this ’74 would recapture that glory. The seller indicates that they recently fitted an HEI distributor, rebuilt the carburetor, and installed a new power steering control valve, piston, and tie rod ends. Add a complete front end rebuild to the list, and it’s easy to see why this Corvette is a turnkey proposition with no mechanical issues.

I admire this Corvette’s consistency, because its interior is as impressive as the exterior. Trimmed in Saddle leather, the seller recently installed new seatcovers and foam, new carpet, sound deadener, and a retro Custom Autosound Bluetooth stereo with a soundbar. The presentation is extremely tidy, with no genuine shortcomings beyond the typical small marks on the console. Functionally, the air conditioning is inoperative, and the only other obvious factory option is the tilt/telescopic wheel. If the buyer revives the A/C, life aboard this Stingray would be extremely comfortable.

Although some enthusiasts prefer originality, others will compromise if the classic ticks enough of the right boxes. If you prefer your cars with a factory look, excellent presentation, and mechanical upgrades that unleash impressive performance, this 1974 Corvette Stingray could be a hot contender. The seller’s price appears very competitive when compared to recent successful sales, and the buyer shouldn’t need to spend a dime beyond the cash that they hand to the seller. It has been on the market for around one day, but how quickly do you think this Stingray will find a new home?

You’re definitely going to catch a few people napping at the lights with that brown colour and real big block power!

Beautiful specimen! My dad bought an auto version of this new in 74. 454 with same interior and exterior color. Better get the A/C working – the interior of that beast will be an oven on a warm day.

Changing the color of this car would be a travesty

The 74 body style, the split in the rear panel and the color, just doesn’t do it for me. I’d have to pass on this one.

Love the color combination, engine swap and four speed. I generally prefer my C3 in a chrome bumper configuration rather than a urethane snout and butt. But I could make an exception in this case. GLWTS.

In 1974, I was offered a NEW 74 coupe with a 454 four speed, in this color at a sales price of $6,995. I was 18 and broke, but two years later I bought a 71 454 coupe for $5,300. I’m not into modified cars and an LS5 is rated at 365 hp, not 425 that is an LS6, one year only 1971 engine. Very nice car, but price too steep. Prices are cooling off and many cars on auction sites not making reserve. At least this one doesn’t have that totally useless and UGLY barbeque grille on the rear deck.

Sorry George but those “barbeque grilles” on the rear deck were most definitely not useless and also considered not UGLY – by many.

I used to take my ’70 Vette convertible camping and and that USEFUL rear luggage rack came in VERY handy.

Plus, wasn’t that rack designed to hold the roof panels when removed, leaving the interior for more storage?

Sorry but the seller is full of BS because that’s definitely not the original paint. The hood has been replaced and is incorrect for a ‘74 big block, as are the front chin spoiler & rock guards.
