As with Subaru or Jeep, whenever I think of Audi I think of all-wheel-drive, or their famous Quattro system. I don’t think of Subarus or Jeeps with just two wheels putting down power to the road, just as with Audis. This 1984 Audi Coupe GT is somewhat of the Ur Quattro’s little brother and it can be found listed here on eBay in Flanders, New Jersey. The current bid price is just over $4,400 with no reserve. Let’s check it out.
I’m a fairly long time Audi owner and a very long time Audi fan. I have had mine for almost 20 years and it’s as much of a work of art, design-wise, as it is fun to drive. I love to just sit in it and look at the interior details, or open the hood or the hatch and see how well it’s built and the thoughtful design and little details. And of course, I love to drive it. Mine has the Quattro system. I’ve never driven the car in our salty winters so I’ve never experienced Audi’s AWD system in action, at least on anything but dry roads. Life is pretty short, I should just start driving it year-round, eh?
The Audi Coupe was made for a couple of decades beginning in 1980. Hey, this would have been a nice high school graduation present for me! Instead, I got enough money ($400) to buy a rusty 1971 Toyota Corolla two-door wagon. That’s just as good, no? (crickets) The GT was added for the 1984 model year and that year also brought a close-ratio 5-speed manual and vented front disc brakes. The next year, 1985, would bring aerodynamic headlights and I might hold out for a 1985 or newer, but this 1984 car looks fantastic.
This car looks flawless to me so far and kudos to the seller for providing a ton of great photos on a separate link! The interior is gorgeous and it appears to be as close to like-new as you’ll ever find. Those seats look like new and I love the wicked cool plaid pattern. I don’t see a rip or bad spot anywhere inside, do you? The underside even looks great.
The engine should be Audi’s 2.1L inline-five cylinder with around 100 hp, the same as my 1980 Dodge D-50 Sport pickup. It isn’t a lot of power and my truck is fun to drive, but I have no doubt that this ’84 Coupe GT would be much, much more fun to drive. Have any of you owned an Audi Coupe GT?
I always loved the look of these, but never bought one as I think Audi parts are expensive, like little Porsches. Am I wrong?
Yeah.
I had an 83 5000 turbo diesel and really loved it. The automatic transmission/transaxle was the weak link with those cars though. The Audi 5 cylinder with a 5 speed manual is the way to go.
My ‘82 coupe was awesome fun to drive on gravel roads, flat out through the twisties With a full cage and Bilsteins all around (ex trans-Amazon rallye car.) it was beat to living hell, but so fun to drive. Parts are easy enough, 4-5 cyl VW/is I stuff, awesome fun with a 3B or AANmotor thrown at them (plus the Quattro from a 4000.) tge early ones like this are super light, but the dash is mostly hard plastic which rattled like nothing else, electrical could use an upgrade like most Vdubs of the era, especially adding headlight relays and safeguarding the VW plastic fuse box.
I had an ‘82 as well. Mine had the exact same interior as the car featured. It was a car I wish I still had.
I owned a 82 and with a 2.22L engine and with a performance camshaft and euro exhaust manifold it ran pretty strong. Mine was Helios blue with brown leather. And was a sharp looking car with 15” wheels.
I owned a ’86 Alpine white Coupe GT 5-speed. Even though it was only fwd, with a good set of snow tires, it handled awesome in the snow! Many times i was pushing snow as deep as the top of the headlights to get through the last mile on my way home (keep it in 3rd & don’t stop!). Was alot of fun to drive & I miss that car! Sold it in the late 90’s with 80k.
Yes, had an ’83 coupe, mint, low miles, same color combo. It was a FWD/auto so I sold it pretty quickly. Very solid car though. I’d turbo this one as the inline 5 is already built to handle it.
Odd design – the motor & battery should switch positions – motor appears to be way too far forward! – would that not upset balance & handling?
I always thought it was optimal for the motor to be as close as possible to the passenger compartment – front or rear.
At least it’s handsome & 2 door! Glass headlites – check.
Some of the best damn snow cars ever made! Had a VW Quantum Syncro Wagon (think Audi 4000 Q wagon with VW switch gear plus room for a dog or several snow boards!) that had manual locking rear AND center diffs and in snow it was unstoppable! It’s been gone 17 years now and I still miss it!
Good Looking ‘ODDLY’.
The Quantum Syncro was based on the Audi 80/90 underpinnings. They were great snow vehicles and the FWD models would just about go anywhere the Quattro would go. They were great cars that needed more power. One of our customers had a UR 83 Quattro that I worked on. I loved to drive that and compared to my 82 coupe that extra power was really fun. Audi’s of that era always had terminal understeer but the UR tamed that to some degree.
We had a 86 4000s. No Quattro , but nice car. In response to one of the first questions. Yeah, she shared a LOT of parts with VW , so plus side easy to find. Downside , like anything German , they think a lot of their parts. Ours had a LOT of electrical problems. It was my wife’s rude to work every day so after 3 years we let it go. It’s was the logical choice , but we both miss our 4000
I owned a 1986 Audi Coupe GT. Bought it new, had it for about 9 years and then sold it to a relative in another state. The car still looks like new and had an engine upgrade done, and is mostly a track car (Recaro seats and a rather noisy exhaust), but looking it at, it looks stock. Only reason I sold it was at the time I couldn’t afford 2 cars.
But, as of right now, I do have a 2004 Audi A6 Sedan (almost like new, only about 45,000 miles) and a 1990 Audi Coupe Quattro (with about 70,000 miles). Up until a month ago, I also had a 2003 Audi A6 Avant.
Oh yeah, and until 2 years ago, I had a 1990 Audi 100 with 358,000 miles …
I guess I just like Audi’s…
