V-Code Roller: 1970 Dodge Super Bee

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The Super Bee arrived in 1968 as Dodge’s answer to the Plymouth Road Runner. Based on the B-bodied Coronet, the Super Bee was less popular than the “Bird” and was cancelled after four model years. The first styling update came in 1970 when 15,506 Super Bees were produced, of which only 1,268 came with the potent 440 “Six-Pack” V8. The seller’s car was one of the latter, but that drivetrain is now MIA. Located in a bunker in Allen, Texas, this rolling project is available here on Facebook Marketplace for $29,500. Thanks for the cool Mopar tip, “BCB42”!

Standard in the 1970 Super Bee was the same 383 cubic inch V8 as offered in the Road Runner. Only two engines were optional – the 440 V8 with triple 2-barrel carburetors (the 4-barrel wasn’t a choice) or the 426 Hemi, which found few buyers. After all, the Super Bee was a budget-minded muscle car like the companion Plymouth. The seller’s car came with a TorqueFlite automatic transmission instead of a 4-speed.

Considering the likely survival rate of 55-year-old muscle cars, few of these V-code Super Bees are probably still around. Sadly, this one won’t be numbers matching, but you could rebuild it using period-correct hardware. This car left the factory wearing Cream paint but now carries Go Mango or grey primer anywhere you look. Whatever bodywork that was needed seems to be out of the way.

The all-important Air Grabber hood has survived well, but the 6-Pack air cleaner has been cut (why?). Though you’ll have to finance a motor and tranny, the 8 ¾ rear-end is still in the rare Dodge. If you’re looking to restore one of these hot muscle cars that were still in vogue at the time, does this Mopar do it for you?
