V8 Drop-Top: 1991 Ford Mustang LX Convertible

Affordable Mustangs of any description are becoming harder to find, and the later Fox-Body examples have been some of the best-performing in the classic market in recent times. That could make a good one a sound financial investment today, and thanks to their reputation for mechanical reliability, one that a new owner could enjoy for many years to come. This 1991 Mustang LX Convertible falls under the affordable heading, and you can add nicely equipped to that description. After 28-years in their care, the owners have decided that it is time for it to find a new home. It is located in Milwaukie, Oregon, and has been listed for sale here on Craigslist. The owner has set the sale price at $13,900, and I have to say a big thank you to Barn Finder Matt H for spotting this classic convertible for us.

Bright Red is an iconic color, and it is ideally suited to cars like this Mustang. It is light and cheerful and seems at home on any vehicle that has performance leanings. The paint on this car presents extremely well, with no significant flaws or problems. It covers panels that appear as straight as an arrow, with no signs of dings, dents, or rust issues. The owner makes no mention of problems below the surface, which is encouraging for potential buyers. The Black powertop is as nice as the rest of the exterior, with a tight fit, no rips, and a clear back window. The remaining glass is equally impressive, while the plastic trim has avoided the type of deterioration that can occur due to age or UV exposure. The alloy wheels show no evidence of marks or staining, meaning that the overall impression of this interior is nothing but positive.

If the Mustang’s exterior looks good, the interior seems to continue that theme. This is one aspect of Fox-Body Mustangs that can graphically show the effects of age or neglect. Seat upholstery can wear, and plastic can crack or break. This car shows none of those problems. The wear-prone outer edges of the bucket seats look particularly good, while the remaining upholstered surfaces are in a similar state. There are no signs of crumbling plastic and no cracks or issues with the dash. That isn’t to say it’s perfect because the owner does note a couple of faults. While the radio works as it should, the cassette player no longer operates. The buyer could search for a genuine replacement, although it could also represent the opportunity to perform an upgrade. The owner also says that the fuel gauge can be vague, so this might warrant further investigation. Otherwise, it seems that there is little to do with this interior. In a 1991 context, it also comes nicely equipped. The buyer will receive air conditioning, power windows, a power driver’s seat, power exterior mirrors, and cruise control.

By 1991, the Mustang could be a good thing to own if you were a buyer seeking a car with some performance credentials. This LX Convertible features the fuel-injected 5.0-liter V8 that pumped out a respectable 225hp. The original owner also equipped this car with a 4-speed automatic transmission, power steering, and power brakes. That all equated to some decent performance figures, meaning that this car should cover the ¼ mile in a respectable 15.4 seconds. The listing shows an odometer reading of 64,000 miles, although the owner doesn’t state whether these are genuine miles. Given the vehicle’s overall condition, I wouldn’t be surprised if they are. They recently treated the transmission to a rebuild, as well as adding a new radiator and exhaust. They don’t specifically state how well the Mustang runs or drives, but they say it has given them many miles of enjoyable motoring. If the visual condition is any indication, it should provide the same pleasure for its next owner.

If recent history is any indication, later Fox-Body Mustangs are set to gradually work their way beyond the reach of many average enthusiasts. If you own one now, these increases mean that you could be onto a winner. If you don’t, it might be wise to act sooner rather than later. This 1991 LX Convertible looks like a gem, and even though the colder weather is fast approaching, addressing its few faults might be the perfect way to occupy some time on those cold Winter days. That way, you would be ready to go the moment the warm weather returns once again. That sounds like a tempting idea to me. How about you?

Being critical to my personal taste I would prefer the dark grey interior (for once) over the dark red. I miss actual interior colors other than neutral, but with the red paint I think the grey would look nicer. Other than that I’d say this looks like a nice find and a good buy to me. Ten years ago when I was looking for one they were $7-10k it seemed, this will hold its value well.

I agree…too much red. Either the charcoal colored cloth, or the white leather (or is it vinyl) would be a better choice.
Either way, nice car! I believe the mileage claim. If not, it’s been well loved and it wouldn’t matter that it has 164,000 miles. Priced reasonably too.

Based on my observations, manual 5.0 Fox body convertibles must be as rare as hen’s teeth.
