Let’s be upfront and realize that while this 1976 International Harvester Scout Traveler has patina, it is not a barn find. It is a V8 powered 4WD that has been upgraded and modified to be driven and used. The seller is asking an eye popping $45,000 for the vehicle but when you look at all the work that has been done, it might actually be a good deal. It is located in Los Angeles, California and would probably make any Scout enthusiast salivate. In 1976, International Harvester introduced a longer wheel base Scout in two different configurations – a Terra (pickup) or a Traveler (wagon).
The interior is really cool. The interior has custom seats, door panels and dash pad that are all covered in a beautiful matching color scheme. The carpet is new and all the electrical has been sorted so the gauges works. The headlights are LED and the indicator lens have been refurbished. The ad states that the exterior paint has been shot with clear to preserve the patina of the original paint. The top on the Scout Traveler is a custom build that accentuates the vehicle. Other modifications include a Bluetooth stereo and custom decals.
This picture from the rear hatch shows just how nice things are finished out. The International Scout was really the first SUV and filled the demand for a multi-functional vehicle with good looks and capability back in 1960. The base engine for the first two generations of the Scout was an inline 4 cylinder engine. By the late 1970’s, it was common to see 304 cubic inch V8 and 345 cubic inch V8 engines. This Scout Traveler has a 345 cubic inch V8 engine backed by a rebuilt 727 torque flight automatic transmission. The drivetrain has received a new starter, alternator, tune up and driveshaft.
Most people like big wheels and tires. This vehicle has 33 x 12.5 R15 BF Goodrich All Terrain tires and a 4 inch lift kit. The suspension includes new shocks and Dana 44 front and rear gearing. The Dana 20 transfer case has a high and low speed. So, it is obvious that someone spent some serious money on this Traveler but they are also asking one of the highest prices we have seen for an International Harvester product here on Barn Finds. I hope it finds a good home and brings smiles to the new buyer.
Can’t blame the vendor for trying; you can always come down but it’s dammed hard to go up—unless it’s the BJ Auction. A lot of people liked the Traveller but I preferred the Scout II. However, if this showed up at my place it would still be welcome…
With the astronomical prices of early trucks much less a real truck, IH weren’t just getting into 4×4’s they were there from the start of SUV’s and they were a truck company. All heavy duty and unfortunately no fender liners, so a bit rust trap in certain areas. These are great off and on road. Early Broncos and Blazers bring the bucks so why not these. Looks solid.

My vehicles as a kid was a 66 scout and a 72 Firebird. Wish they where still mine, and this is a great truck, only thing wrong with it is the 2022 price!! Lol
Could you wrap it with clear film instead of shooting with clear coat? Not sure about pricing on either. Seems like a wrap might be easier?
My only complaint is no engine pics. This thing is fantastic!
Paint the lower panels and drive it, a nice one to be sure.
