V8 Shorty Swap: 1988 Chevrolet G10 Van

A classic van is an extremely practical choice for a classic project. Right now, my 1981 Toyota HiAce is full of beach chairs, umbrellas, donation items and replacement scrap metal for the rusted portions. In case my insurance agent is watching, I don’t use it for hauling any of this stuff, but with the van in the garage, it helps get all those things into one place and off the floor! Perhaps that’s not the first thing that comes to mind when viewing this 1988 Chevy G10 van here on eBay, but it’s one way you could use it!

Anyway, I wouldn’t hold it against you if you were kinder to this van than I am to mine. This G10 is a short wheelbase design and some might say not as robust as the bigger G20. However, are you even going to notice the effects of this light-duty designation? I don’t think so. The porthole window and louvers on the back glass – along with that wicked side-exit exhaust – all combine to make this one nicely customized without being over the top.

The interior isn’t as psychedelic as some of the vans we’ve featured recently, and that’s OK – this looks much easier to convince your wife to ride in. The rear doors have some interesting shelves attached to them, and the interior is carpeted. I think I spy something resembling a painting or a flat-screen, along with a mini-fridge and additional storage. Overall, this looks like a van you can use every day and easily retrofit into a camping / party rig if desired.

As the lighter duty model, the G10 originally came with a six-cylinder. This has been removed in favor of a V8, but unfortunately, the A/C lines didn’t make the transition – so there’s no A/C in the Chevy at the moment. That should be remedied to make this shorty even more fun to bounce around in, but it’s certainly no reason to cross it off your list. Bidding is over $4K at the moment and there’s no reserve!

i think the long panels on the walls are upright vertical mirrors mounted horizontally for that “effect”

Nothing worse than someone going overboard on a standard van interior…because they really wanted an RV. I appreciate that they kept the interior mostly uncluttered.
