Waterborne Project: 1986 Hovertechnics Hoverstar

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Since 1984, Hovertechnics has been in the business of designing, engineering, and manufacturing hovercraft, trailers, and parts. The Hoverstar is one of their models, capable of carrying two passengers over the water or ice at speeds of up to 50 mph. The seller’s 1986 model is going to need a complete restoration, but we’re told it’s sound and the motor turns freely. For the sportsman who already has everything else, this interesting find is in Milton, Florida, and available here on Facebook Marketplace for $1,620. Thanks, Chuck Foster, for bringing this interesting vehicle to light!

The Hoverstar is powered by a 500-cc Yamaha 2-stroke engine and this one has compression but needs to be rebuilt. It comes with the optional salt-water exhaust system should you want to take it out on the ocean once your restoration is complete. Red in color, everything is faded from sitting outside for has likely been a long period of time. We’re told the “boat” has only had two owners and if you tried to buy one of these spanking new it would set you back $70,000.

That’s been underwater, and you’ll end up underwater if you spend to try and restore it.

I have a Scat hovercraft project that I bought several years ago. Can’t wait to get it done, so I can drive it across the street, and onto the local lake.
