Weekend Driver: 1990 Chevrolet K5 Blazer

Although this probably isn’t the time of year when most people are considering venturing into the wilderness, it could be the perfect time to follow the motto of the Scout Movement and “Be Prepared.” Buying an SUV now would allow a new owner to develop an understanding of its capabilities so that when the warm weather arrives, they can head into the great outdoors brimming with confidence. That could make this 1990 Chevrolet K5 Blazer the perfect weapon. It presents well, with the owner stating it has no mechanical issues. If you feel tempted, the Blazer is listed here on eBay in Burbank, Illinois. Frantic bidding has pushed the price beyond the reserve, although, at $8,550, it remains in affordable territory.

The Second Generation Blazer, introduced in 1973, is already an attractive vehicle. That impression is heightened when the original owner elected to order this one in Code 41 Black. It adds a touch of menace, but this classic avoids a somber appearance courtesy of some sparkling chrome trim. The paint shines richly, with any defects or issues too minor to show in the supplied photos. The panels are straight, and there is no evidence of rust. The seller provides some underside shots that show nothing but the occasional spot of surface corrosion. However, they also reveal the undercoat peeling from the frame, so cleaning and treating everything could prove a wise strategy. The trim and glass look excellent, with the wheels and larger Firestone tires adding a sense of presence and potentially improving this Blazer’s off-road capabilities.

While there’s nothing like brute horsepower in any classic, smooth torque delivery is essential if an off-roader is to perform at its best. The 350ci V8 under the hood of this classic should deliver, churning out 210hp and 300 ft/lbs of torque. The power finds its way to the road via a four-speed automatic transmission and an NP241 transfer case. The ability to cover the ¼-mile in 17.9 seconds may seem impressive for a vehicle of this type which tips the scales at 4,540lbs. However, the fact that the V8 delivers over 80% of its torque under 2000rpm allows this Blazer to be an effective tool off-road. The seller states this classic has 132,000 miles on the clock, but that drivetrain combination should offer years of faithful service to the new owner. This Chevy runs and drives well, ready to hit the road with a new owner behind the wheel.

Although this Blazer’s interior presents well, it has one noticeable flaw that some potential buyers may wish to address. The dash pad has a substantial crack on the passenger side. Although a cover might hide the worst of the trouble, the crack is sure to widen and deteriorate over time. The buyer could attempt a repair, but a reproduction pad for $300 would permanently eliminate the problem. Fitting the new item would be time-consuming, but it would be a rewarding way to burn some time until spring shows its face. Otherwise, the Red velour cloth upholstery looks excellent, as do the door trims and carpet. There’s no crumbling plastic or evidence of abuse. Comfort features include air conditioning, power windows, and a tilt wheel.

This 1990 K5 Blazer is a tidy classic that has attracted an impressive thirty-two bids. The action hasn’t seen the price go ballistic, and it remains affordable. Its lack of significant issues means it offers immediate enjoyment, although addressing its minor shortcomings, like the cracked dash pad, would represent a rewarding way to spend the winter. That way, this classic would shine like a new penny when the buyer hits the road intent on a life of adventure. That sounds like a prospect too tempting to resist.

Nice find. I observe there’s a hole in the driver side front fender reinforcement but that’s just being picky on a 30+years K5. Drop the side steps and associated angle irons then enjoy
