Weird Wagon: 1991 Citroen BX 19 TZI

Citroën’s seemingly relentless quest to answer the question, “How can we make it more weird?” brought the BX to market in 1982, and this 1991 Citroën BX 19 TZI Five-Door Estate (wagon) in New Waverly, Texas packs some delightful weirdness for those who enjoy marching to the beat of their own drum. With 135,000 miles on the clock, this BX should have more life to give. Check out more pictures and details on Facebook Marketplace. The asking price of $7500 buys a wagon slightly smaller than the Hyundai Kona with plenty of room for family vacations. Despite its age, the BX breaks 30 MPG, according to the owner, and this daily driver will grab plenty of attention wherever you go. Thanks to reader Jack M. for spotting this sporty French flyer.

Though not torn, the upholstery shows its age. Nicely bolstered seats look comfortable and supportive. A five-speed manual gearbox puts the claimed 120 HP to the ground via the front wheels. Engine pictures escaped the listing, but you should find a transverse SOHC inline four-cylinder under the hood.

A color change from green to blue rates 7/10 according to the listing, though some areas look almost spray-painted or noticeably different from others. Despite Citroën’s home in Saint-Ouen-sur-Seine, designers eschewed the French Curve, drafting the BX entirely with a straight-edge. Disappointing trials rendered the innovative square wheels, tires, and steering wheel troublesome. Citroën relented, fitting conventional circular elements for some parts. We’re joking of course.

Hydraulic suspension delivers a pillowy ride on rough terrain and adjustable ride height, a splendid parlor trick yielding enough chassis elevation to clear a hunkering Armadillo. Cover the grille with your hand and you might mistake this Citroën for Audi’s contemporary 200 Wagon.

Full instrumentation and an asymmetric steering wheel remind you this is no ordinary vehicle, and you’re no ordinary person. Rarely appearing in America, this right-sized BX holds its own for a sub-$10,000 family truckster. You could probably do 95% of the same trips as your neighbor’s $60,000 Tahoe while getting double the gas mileage. Would you consider this quirky Citroën as a practical daily driver?

A Gandini designed long roof that rides and handles like a Citroen and doesn’t look like an every car for 7500 bucks! (probably negotiable). What’s not to like? Caveat-make sure you have a marque-knowledgeable mechanic in place before you commit.

HA! I had bookmarked this on FB months ago. Never thought to submit it here. I’m a sucker for odd wagons. Very cool.

The car for when you want to be different, but not Citroen DS different.

You may have thought you were joking about square wheels, but my Grandfather raved about the invention of the triangular wheel when he was a boy, because, it eliminated one bump per revolution!!

Beautiful car. It’s unforgivable that Citroën never offered anything in the USA throughout the 1970s and 80s.

The main reason for that was that Citroën’s brilliant hydropneumatic suspension (same as the DS and SM) could not maintain a sufficient ride height to meet US-DOT minimum headlight height regs, and making alterations to satisfy that reg would not have been mechanically and/or financially feasible for the likely modest US sales volume they’d support. Passage of this regulation is the main reason why Citroën left the US market when they did.

It has been rumored that the famed LSD chemist, Owsley, visited the Citroen design studios, in the late 80’s.

Brilliant cars; I had 3 of them (consecutively). Got the best mileage from the 17 TZD estate – 55mpg towing the racing car down to Pembrey.

You become familiar with the plumbing after a while and lose the fear!

Less weird than the older ones with the rotating drum speedo and indicator rocker switch…

I love weird stuff, and this is in my wheelhouse. Unfortunately I live in Kalifornia, and this would be nearly impossible to register here.

Brilliant cars , we had five of them and I wish I had one now. Has a ride that nothing can match today, potholes just don’t feature. Seats are wonderfully comfortable.diesels were the best , very smooth and quick. It’s quirky but has an enormous load space , i would drive this every day!
