Well-Baked Wagon: 1970 Ford Country Sedan

The Country Sedan was to the Galaxie 500 as the Country Squire was to the LTD. It was a full-size Ford wagon with less pizzazz and part of the company’s lineup from 1952 to 1974. In terms of production numbers, it was always overshadowed by the fancier LTD. This 1970 edition has been sitting out in the Arizona sun since the 1980s (the last time it was registered), so it has loads of patina and needs some mechanical attention. Located in Tucson, it’s available here on eBay where the bidding has only reached $620.

We assume this car is being offered by a dealer, though with the volume of details provided, only an owner would be that committed. There are loads of surface rust everywhere you look which always makes you wonder how things look where you can’t see. There is some deeper rust in the cargo area and part of the glass is gone. This wagon once wore Pastel Blue paint, and the seller thinks that whatever is left of it is original. The front grille took a whack by a forklift at some point.

The interior is worn, and we’re told there is some minor rust under what’s remaining of the carpeting. Though you might like patina and could leave the body alone, for now, the passenger compartment will need to get a makeover. This car still has its factory air conditioning, but it’s nowhere near being in working order.

If you pour a bit of gas down the carburetor, the seller says the auto starts every time (otherwise, not so much). This wagon, one of 22,645 built in 1970, has Ford’s 351 cubic inch V8 with a 2-barrel carburetor. At 90,000 miles, the seller thinks there’s still some life left in the drivetrain. The brakes need help, especially in the front as the Country Sedan relies on the rear ones for stopping. The buyer will get a wagon with roller wheels and tires, not the fancy aftermarket ones seen in some of the photos. But you can have them for $350 extra. You check out the vehicle further here in this video clip.

If you have solid floors then you have a good foundation. The budget minded would be looking for a rusty donor car. A total interior redo on a wagon has got to be a small fortune. This Ford is one of the best looking wagons in this era.

I wonder if you have to pull the shifter towards you when starting it?

I don’t – you absolutely need to! I don’t think I ever met a big old Ford where that wasn’t required.

In the mid 60s there was a Disney movie called The Ugly Dachshund. I caught Dean Jones doing with his 1964 Ford Country Sedan in one scene.
