Whole Lotta Red: 1978 Chevrolet Camaro

Red on red on red on red—that’s how it seems you should describe the color combo on the 1978 Camaro seen here on eBay. You can make your play for a bid just around $7,000, though you’ll have to wait a few days to see if you win the auction. Currently, 29 bids have been proffered, with the reserve not met, so let’s discount that 7G number and hike the bidding up higher. What’s it likely to get to? Let’s just say you don’t have a lot of choices at even ten grand these days. If you guess and time it right and win this Chevy, you’ll find it waiting for you in Bloomington, Wisconsin.

That’s a state where you might expect to see some rust damage or repair, but the seller’s claim that this beauty is in its original paint puts those worries to rest, if true, and who’s to doubt? The original place of residence of this pony car was Louisiana, so that explains a lot. The paint looks mostly good, with some fading evident in at least one image. There’s also an image in the door jamb that makes me kind of wonder about overspray–repair? Repaint? Eagle-eyed Barn Finds, weigh in on that if you please. If the paint checks out, you know what they say—they’re only original once, so best to preserve this Camaro as is if the case for originality if solid.

You will have fun driving this car, as it’s capable of going anywhere, or so the ad says as it encourages you to buy it and drive it home. You’ll be motivated by a somewhat musty-dusty 350-CID V8 with a four-barrel carb and dual exhaust. It’s not a sports car, not with the automatic slush-box shifting for you, but a cruiser is more fun often anyway. Worried about mechanical condition? You need to do some homework, because the ad doesn’t say much. Mileage? “108.” Is that 108,000? 100,108 (that first digit would not show up)? Attesting to the care the car has received, all the accessories are said to be working. (No word on the state of the AC, which is always a concern.)

Some of us who live in smog states might take an immediate pass on this one since it’s subject to tailpipe testing, and that’s fair. But for the rest of you, this would be a handsome show-and-shine candidate. All that red (or whatever this color is properly called by the General), inside and out, is just plain fun, and pleasant to look at to boot.

Thanks Brian. I too like the all red, and looks a nice Camaro. 350 4bbl is a nice surprise. Looks like it could have been a 305 candidate. Love the wheels. Wonder what BF resident Camaro expert Greg thinks.

Decent looking Camaro. One thing to keep in mind and I say this because I bought a 78 Rally Sport with same engine combo as this one and it seemed flat on power and through further examination I found the camshaft was worn to the point of definitely effecting performance, I would guess there’s a good chance this one will be the same and mine had very similar mileage.

I bought a 78 Lt Camaro brand new off the lot. Had them put the Hurst T tops on it. 350 auto. Had all the bells. One problem was it felt soft in the front for a new car, so I took it back to the service department & they checked it out. Found the Coil springs in this car weren’t even a GM part….lol But that car sure was fun & the ladies loved it
