Will It Sting Again? 1977 Hornet AMX

amx

Did you know there was a connection between this late AMC AMX and the Pontiac GTO? Jim Wangers, one of the creators of the original Pontiac GTO, later went on to form a company that, among other things, converted mild-mannered Hornet Hatchbacks into AMX’s for AMC. Actually, they were still fairly mild-mannered as Motortown (his company) was not allowed to alter the drivetrains. This one has a 304 V8 in addition to its non-original graphics and is located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It’s for sale here on eBay where bidding is below $100 as I write this with no reserve! I suppose I shouldn’t call this mild-mannered; they did get major suspension upgrades and an aggressive-looking appearance package. We don’t know much about this particular example except it “ran when stored” and has less than 53k original miles. Even though the pictures could be clearer, what more do you need to know at that price?

it has a NJ title being sold in PA . i drove a new hornet with the 304/auto ” back in the day “, seemed fast, handled good and brakes worked well. might have made a little money drag racing it until word got around that the car was a runner. worth doing a PI, looking for rust, then either bid or make the seller an offer. could make a nice daily driver. nice find.

In 1989 the car was titled with 125,500 miles on it… I think that the claim of 53k miles is perhaps 153k?

I always like the hornet hatchbacks. Rust is the issue I would be afraid of. 70’s iron and road salt didn’t mix.

This is right up my alley! However before reading the hope for the best/expect the worst style of ad I would want a better look at it outside the garage before any real money changes hands. It looks that it has had a very incorrect cosmetic restoration as mentioned. The 304 engine is a plus and is correct with the H in the vin. The 304 emblems as well as the AMX decals are wrong. It is a factory A/C car another plus but missing the compressor.Easy enough. Black interior is another plus as some were tan with a few being Levis. These are very cool cars and handle very well in stock trim. They are unique in the fact that it is a one year only option and made in limited numbers.

This Hornet Is in my driveway. It’s a real amx package car black interior and white seats but the front buckets are missing. It’s running now and needs a complete front end job. So far this car is a money pit, But I’m on a mission it will be on the road again.
