Worthy Project? 1975 Oldsmobile Hurst/Olds

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Oldsmobile expanded its relationship with Hurst Performance following the success of the 4-4-2. For nine model years stretched between 1968 and 1984, the Hurst/Olds was born. Based on the Cutlass Supreme coupe, the 1975 Hurst/Olds saw a production of 2,535 units, its highest output to date. This edition has had the same owner for the past 44 years but has been left out in the woods for the past two decades. Hailing from Hannibal, Missouri, this project is available here on craigslist for $2,800 OBO. Thanks for the Hurst tip, Gunter Kramer!

For its sixth year in production, the 1975 Hurst/Olds would be one of 0the first GM cars to have removable T-tops. Only two colors were offered, black or white, but we don’t know how the seller’s car came because it wears an older, dimpled code of primer red. Two motors were available, the W-25 350 V8 or the W-30 455, either of which could be under the hood of the seller’s car. If it’s still there, this car would have a catalytic converter as part of the exhaust system, first required in 1975.

A key feature of these cars was the Hurst “Dual Gate” shifter which continued for 1975. The cars only came with an automatic transmission, so no other choices were necessary. Another Hurst feature on these autos was a digital LED numerical readout tachometer mounted on the center console. The seller’s car is said to only have 40,000 miles, so we wonder what went wrong for this car to become forgotten for so long.

Due to its dirt surroundings and flat tires, the undercarriage of this Oldsmobile is likely going to have problems. And if the T-tops leak, that’s another issue. These were cool cars, and they can fetch north of $40,000 according to Hagerty, given in primo condition. This will be an expensive restoration, so would someone searching for one of these cars be better served by finding one in better condition to start?

There’s going to be a lot of surprised 68-74 Corvette owners out there, when they find out the 75 Hurst Olds was the first GM car to have removable T-Tops.

This poor old thing is rough. I think if I was in the market for a 70’s GM midsize, I think I’d prefer to have a Pontiac Grand Am or Can Am instead.

It’s not a super rare car even being the Hurst edition so I would think in it’s current state it’s a parts car. Hard to believe it only has 40,000 miles on it.

There are suddenly at least 4 1975 H/O cars for sale I know of. They range in price from this sad state of affairs to $30,000 for a black restored one in NJ. I looked at a rust free white one in Mass three weeks ago. Asking $17,900. The price has come down. I drove it for a test ride. More comfortable than any new junk built today including that excuse GM calls a Corvette.

Perfect car for a very young oldsmobile lover!

A few decades of parts hunting ,frame repair, floor replacement and bodywork will keep this young man very busy and he will also have to work overtime to produce additional money for this project
House , baby, wife , life

Start early and you should be able to drive it a bit before your retirement
