Worthy Workhorse: 1984 Ford F-150 XL 4WD

What’s the best-selling vehicle in America? Ok, you’re going to know that answer. But do you know that over 41 million F-series trucks have been made since the first one rolled off the line in 1948, and more impressively, the F-150 has been the best-selling vehicle in America for forty-two years in a row? Not the best-selling truck; the best-selling vehicle. There’s a reason for that popularity: these trucks can be optioned almost any way you want, they’re rugged, and they look good. Here on eBay is a 1984 F-150 XL 4×4, with an asking price of $6500 or best offer. The seller says it’s a “fly into East Wenatchee, Washington, and drive it home” proposition, though he adds: “at your own risk”. This seventh generation of F-series trucks is demarcated by a re-design in 1980, flattening the nose and making the most of rectangular shapes throughout.

Ford’s 5.8 liter V8 sits in the engine bay, bolted up to a 302 four-speed automatic transmission. The seller notes the motor doesn’t smoke or leak. It’s had an oil change and the air conditioner compressor is new. The system has been charged and as he notes, “will freeze you out of the truck.” The battery, fuel pump, and brake booster are relatively new. The power steering box does leak a bit, and the rear gas tank may not work – the seller has never tried to use it. The odometer reads 60,000 miles but the AutoCheck report provides evidence that it’s rolled over.

This is the XL trim package, one step up from the standard truck. The door panels are fancier than the base model and outside, we have two-tone paint set off with trim strips. Rubber mats cover the floor and the windows wind up the old-fashioned way, but there’s cruise control and of course that frigid AC. The seller installed a modern Pioneer Bluetooth unit with hands-free calling and new speakers. I think the XL came with a headliner, but this truck has none. The driver’s side seat fabric is separating and the dash has a few cracks, but other than those flaws, the interior is in decent shape.

This truck has the 8′ bed that makes it a real work truck, though buyers could opt for a 6 1/2′ bed. Other than surface rust, the truck appears to be corrosion-free. Photos show the undersides of the doors are clean. On the other hand, that AutoCheck report records collision damage in 2017, with no details. This listing has garnered plenty of interest but no takers yet, despite being right on top of Hagerty’s value for a “fair” example. Do you think this F-150 will sell at the ask?

“302 four speed transmission”?! The ad says it’s a 302/ auto transmission. Not a 5.8 litre.

Ok. Tell me what he means in the “item specifics” then, see attached. Thanks!

He is obviously confused. In the narrative he says ” 4×4, 302/auto” and nothing about a four speed transmission.

The “F” in the VIN indicates a 302 (5.0). OD automatic was not available in 1984.

I figured maybe it had been swapped out.

The fabulous Bull Nose F150! Great truck, with a sane price. And…3000 miles away from me. As usual.

Not a bad looking truck at all , and the price seems very good subject to making some further enquiries from the seller. Ford always made great trucks and Im sure this one wont take too long to get noticed and taken home by a new owner.

Chevrolet or Ford in this era are great trucks. I have one of each. My Ford is the 82 version in F350 form with a Jerr Dan roll back bed. This truck has served me effortlessly for over 20 years. Mine is the same color as this one. Caveman simple to manage, rust depending on your location is the enemy. This beats one of these outrageously expensive techno monsters of today. It’s a truck and will do truck stuff with little to no complaints.
