Yard Find: 1967 Ford Mustang Convertible

The highly successful Ford Mustang got its first restyle in 1967, just as competition was entering the field. The car had a slightly bigger appearance and could now accommodate big-block engines under the hood. Nearly 45,000 convertibles were built that year, including this “semi-rare” project that has a 289 cubic inch V8 that previously had a 4-barrel carb set-up. Located in a yard in Westford, Massachusetts, this non-running ‘Stang is available here on eBay where the current bid is $3,675.

Given the tremendous sales success of 1964-66 and pressure from new competitors, it’s not surprising that Mustang demand dropped a tad to 472,000 units in 1967. But that was still twice that of its closest rival, the new Camaro over at Chevrolet. Ford would continue to dominate the “pony car” market well into the 1970s even though sales declined year after year until 1974 when it was “reinvented” as a subcompact.

The seller bought this Mustang as a car to work on himself/herself. However, it resides several hours away, and the time needed to whip the auto into shape hasn’t been there, so it’s time for Ford to move on. The seller provides a Marti Report that puts this edition in semi-rare territory (as the seller puts it), but the photos of said report don’t make it easy to determine the numbers. While it was a “4V” setup when new, it’s been converted to “2V” by someone to save fuel, and the 4V intake manifold is gone.

Other than a missing rear seat cushion, the Ford may be complete and reading for a restoration. The engine will turn over but not actually start, perhaps due to sitting for an extended period. We’re told that rust shouldn’t be a problem though the photos of the undercarriage suggest it’s at least crusty. Also, the driver’s side front fender has a few small holes near the headlight. This could be a nice Mustang to restore, but none of those projects are ever easy.

    The rust through that high on the drivers side front fender is a red flag. If rust through is that high then there may be considerably more rust than the pictures show.

      Actually, the upper fender rust, doesn’t mean much at all… I have had a few cars, with “upper” rust, because there was damage to the undercoating, and salt got into. I have a 66 Thunderbird right now, with a rust hole 3 feet up the car, and it is from out West, and there is NO rust on the underside, at all!

      I had a ’67 that had holes like that in the passenger side fender about the same place. Everything under the fender was in good shape and nothing but surface rust in the wheel well. You’ll never know what is ther until you take a look.

      Did you try clearing your cache and cookies? Nice looking Honda 305. I haven’t seen or ridden one since 1969/1970.

        I did try that Paul, thank you. I’m going horizontal for the evening now so I’ll sign off everything for the night. I’ve owned a couple 305s, love them. Have one left, an original 1965. Gonna sell it soon. My days in the saddle are over.

      Had the same issue until this morning too.
      Hate to see you give up such a beautiful bike-they’re amazing therapy when we most need it…had a ‘65 in ‘71 (but MUCH more worn!😁) in HS. Loved they bike👍🏻

    who the hell takes pictures like this, he must have sent his 6 year old kid out to shoot some of these, this is even more suspect to bigger issues.
    i live within 90 minutes of this seller and i wouldn’t have him pay me to go see this—–hard pass

      They look like old photographs that were scanned into digital format.
      That circa 2001 Ford Focus in one of the pictures also makes me doubt these are current pictures.

    Have a 67 Stang, clean body, narrowed Dana 60, Centerlines, no motor now, might put my 460/429 Mix in it or 351 Cleveland. Had a 67 in the 70’s & it was fun, 289 auto, put some Mud Tires on the back. Had a 66 also & some Falcons, 64 289 4 speed Sprint was really nice.
