Yard Find: 1969 Dodge Charger R/T

Most people think of the Ford Mustang as the sales success story of the 1960s. But that wouldn’t be giving the Dodge Charger its due, too. Charger sales in 1966-67 were uninspiring, but a redesign for 1968-70 sent demand through the roof. The second generation became popular thanks to the model’s media appearances in the movie Bullitt, TV show Dukes of Hazzard, and so forth. This 1969 edition is the desirable R/T edition, but it’s rusting away in the yard next to what may be the seller’s house. Needing loads of love, this Mopar is available here on craigslist from Clay, New York for $18,995. We can’t get enough of the tips brought to us by T.J.!

So, how popular did the Charger become? Dodge built 37,344 copies in 1966, dropping to 15,788 in 1967. Then Chrysler’s B-body intermediates were redesigned in 1968 and Charger sales ballooned to 92,590, followed by 85,680 in 1969, and 46,315 in 1970 before another redesign in 1971 sent sales up again. The R/T would have its best year in the ‘60s in 1969, with more than 19,000 built. The R/T mixed upscale trim with big V8 power – the 375 hp 440 cubic inch “Magnum V8” was standard (and a few buyers upgraded from there to the 426 Hemi).

The seller describes the condition of this Charger as “fair” which seems a bit optimistic. The car appears to be sitting on top of the chassis of another vehicle and has been there for a long time. Rust is everywhere, including a ginormous hole in the trunk lid. The seller says it’s “untouched,” which makes sense, and that it’s not missing any parts which could also be a stretch. Until you start taking this car apart and inventory pieces and components, how would you know?

This Dodge was once powered by the now-dormant 440 engine and an automatic transmission. But at 61,000 miles, the drivetrain is said to be numbers matching. That may help validate the asking price of the automobile. The seller has the cowl tag, but it’s mostly rusted away, too, so it’s hard to tell how this vehicle was equipped when new. A restoration will be costly.

“Fair!?” A bit optimistic? Ahhahahahaha. ROTFL. (Just kidding around) I am probably the last person who would say this but this doesn’t even look like a good parts car. I look at everything as a possible rebuild but wow. Hate to see any car in this bad of condition. Good luck with this one.

There would be a brown dust cloud when this hits the shredder and very little for the smelter and a pile of crap for the landfill. Nothing to see here folks…move along. Look at the front suspension and you know what little lurks beneath.

Really, another one pulled from a field or old junkyard… parts car. Appears to me you would be purchasing the title, vin and what’s left of the fender tag. Amazed if seller gets half the asking price.

They say your eyes and brain can mentally fill in the gaps that aren’t there in a picture. This is a fine, fully complete charger if I ever saw one…

Complete and utter garbage. But, a rich, Mopar newbie will probably step up.

Although it’s totally gone and unsalvageable, given the color and the stripe delete option this would have been a stunning Charger. Interestingly a friend of mine pulled an exact copy of this car in just about the same condition several years ago here in Pa.

I said the ’64 GTO was the bottom of the barrel, this is clearly posted for shock value. While many gasp in horror, southern types, mostly, this is nothing unusual for most that lived in the rust belt. I give the author(s) the utmost credit, they would even spend any time on something like this, but we must remember, it’s a site called “Barn Finds”, and what one would expect behind a barn, certainly not in one. We junked cars like this, it’s so refreshing to see one again that someone thought was worth saving. The price is clearly a typo.

I mentioned on another post, how a guy put a video on Yoo Toob, about how the classic car market was pricing out the average guy. This was the exact car he featured, as an example.

There is no way this car, or what’s left of it, is worth 19 grand! I’m hoping the price is a typo. Someone would be able to salvage some parts off this car, but the body is shot. Depending on the engine, trans, differential, would be some good parts, along with some of the trim and instruments,
It’s to bad to see this car in this condition, I would have loved to seen it in it’s hay day!
