1 of 219: 1972 Plymouth Road Runner GTX

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

In the late 1960s, Plymouth fielded two mid-size muscle cars. The first, the GTX, was born in 1967 and was a premium-performance automobile. The second, the Road Runner,  came along in 1968 to fit the needs of more budget-conscious hot car buyers. By 1972, the market had begun to cool for these vehicles, so Plymouth made the GTX an option on the better-selling Road Runner. With a 440 cubic inch V8 and a 4-speed manual transmission, we’re told this example is one of only a couple of hundred produced. Located in Cave Creek, Arizona, this low-mileage survivor needs work but is available here on craigslist for $28,975. Thanks for another great Highland Park tip, T.J.!

When the GTX was merged with the Road Runner, those cars were much better trimmed than the latter automobiles had previously been known for. The pairing would last through 1974, and the Road Runner stayed around for another year before it was later revived as a cosmetic version of the compact Volare. What makes the seller’s car a rarity, we’re told, is that it also has the Track-Pack option, and a Dana 60 rear-end with 3.54-1 gears. The 4-speed has the Hurst Pistol Grip shifter.

This Mopar has been in storage for several years, but we’re told it will respond with a turn of the ignition switch. Beyond that, we don’t know the running condition of the vehicle and the passage of time always has a way of downgrading equipment. The Sherwood Green paint could be original, but it’s well-worn, and the black vinyl top it once had is now long gone. According to the seller, some of the codes on the car match with one another, so what’s here could largely be original. The fender tag is MIA.

Perhaps due to it living in the Southwest, there is little to no rust on the machine. The black interior looks quite tidy for being 52 years old. Even the Magnum 500 wheels appear good and the raised white letter tires are newer and likely useable. The patented Road Runner “meep meep” horn is still there, and we assume it works. Much of the paperwork that came with the car way back when has survived and comes with the deal. The seller believes the asking price is fair for such a rare car, but you’ll have to add some more to it if you want to get it show-worthy one day.

Not sure why a Dana rear would be needed(tho nice it’s there!), considering the 440 in ’72 had 8.2:1 compression & was rated at 280 net horses – & could run on regular gas.
If an inexpensive air grabber hood can be found, i would install it – nothing cooler than that!
Always loved the styling of these, with well proportioned large side windows, unlike the ’72 charger.
That is 1 beefy sway bar on the rear.

All passenger cars that came equipped with a 440 or a 426 HEMI and 4spds came with Dana 60’s.

All Track Pack and Super Track Pack cars came with the Dana 60 — that’s the option that forced the installation of that axle. While Steve R is correct in saying that all cars with a 440 or Hemi and a four speed is correct, it’s correct because the selection of one of the Track Pack options was mandatory with those engines in combination with the A833 four speed.

Why in the world do people remove the fender tag? I will never understand that.

Wow… I just looked at the listing less than an hour ago… I guess that shows the power of good marketing, which this site provides.

Here it is, the one I always dreamed about. Why, oh why, didn’t I do it back in the eighties? Bought everything else, have none of them now. Still love the look of these.

Since the Dec. 2022 listing, it looks like someone replaced the dash pad and seat covers (hopefully the foam, too). Not a bad deal for the $75 asking price increase. No wonder it sold.
