1 of 269? 1976 Jensen GT

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

In the U.S., the Jensen marque may be best known for the Interceptor grand touring car of the 1970s that had Chrysler power under the hood. While those cars had low production numbers themselves, the Jensen GT was even rarer with only 269 out of 511 total copies being built for western consumption. This GT looks like a nice survivor, but the seller provides few details or photos, so we don’t know much other than its scarcity. Located in San Jose, California, this potential survivor looks to be in good condition and is available here on craigslist for $12,000. Thanks, rex m, for the heads-up on this one!

The Jensen GT, a British sports car, was a one-year wonder. It was introduced by Jensen Motors in late 1975 as the “shooting-brake” version of the Jensen-Healey. The car had a 2+2 design with a small back seat. Aside from the body shape and seating, it differed little from the company’s roadster. The vehicle ceased production in May 1976 when Jensen Motors went into receivership. Like a lot of British sports cars, much of its production was intended for the North American market or 53% in the case of the GT.

Powered by what should be a 1973cc Lotus 907 I-4 engine paired with a 5-speed manual transmission, the only thing the seller reveals about his car is that it has 80,000 miles. These weren’t big autos like the Interceptor at 162 inches in length and weighing in at just over 2,400 lbs. The last photo here was borrowed from the net to provide another view of what the car should look like.

Got to be kidding! “1 out of 2” pictures? Real salesman at work here.

At least the car cover is off and it is out in the sunlight. 98% CL ads don’t even come close to that. Seller figures you’ve done your research so no wordy description.

Yet another car where the seller is too lazy to provide adequate photos..either that or there’s much to hide.

Finally…. A car listed on BF that doesn’t fall with in the parameters of the endless run of American iron . So what if the seller doesn’t list all the goodies. This could be a car for long weekend drives in the country or knocking back miles on the interstate. I wonder if I can trade him my Mercedes ….

Man I am a sucker for shooting brakes. These were slightly more upmarket than the roadster. They look better in person than pictures. This is not to far from me if anyone is interested could go and take lots of pictures for you.

Looks a nice example of a rare car. If you are interested and preferably local, I guess you´ll need to contact the seller!

The GT was late in the production run, so less likely to have engine problems. Colin Chapman cleverly (amorally…) sold the motor to Jensen-Healey before he actually put it in a Lotus. The engine was apparently far from ready for public release with warranty claims and tarnished reputation damaging the Jensen-Healey project from the start.

No flies on Chapman, just in the vicinity….

A single photo should be sufficient. ONLY AN IDIOT would buy this car without a close personal inspection anyway so one photo let’s a serious potential prospect know if it’s worth there time to at least contact the seller and then proceed further.

Fun, fast and all low mileage, because they all broke young. Those that didn’t make it inside, rusted away. My brother had one and it was in the shop more than on the road. The good thing about that was that I got to hang out in the Lotus shop all through high school.

      Hi,
I know him because I’m the one who has bought the car from him.
At this moment the GT is on his way to the Netherlands.
Maybe I’m an idiot but the loads of pictures and movies I’ve received from the owner after contacting him convinced me I would do the wright thing.
Well, we’ll see when it arrives in about 5 weeks or so.
