1 of 32: 1970 Ford Mustang 351 V8 4-Speed

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Ford’s Mustang led the “pony car” scene from its debut in 1964 and into the 1970s. But sales would decline year-over-year from 1966-on as competition appeared from all angles. Production in 1970 was still a respectable 190,000 units and included this sweet convertible. The seller says it’s just 1 of 32 built with a 351 cubic inch V8 (2-barrel) and a 4-speed manual transmission. Located in West Vancouver, British Columbia, this beauty is available here on craigslist for $39,900 (Canadian currency?). Thanks for the “pony” tip, Rocco B.!

To keep the Mustang fresh, Ford restyled the car in 1967-68, again in 1969-70, and also for 1971-73. Each time, the auto got a bit bigger and performance would move up a notch with each iteration. After adding quad headlights in 1969, the 1970 Mustang went back to dual peepers again, mounted in the grille. Convertibles were slowly falling out of fashion and just under 7,700 of them in standard or deluxe trim were produced as Mustangs in 1970.

We gather from the details the seller provides that a Marti Report has been purchased on this Ford. But no mention is made of it or where the production data came from. The rare engine/tranny pairing is said to be numbers-matching and the vehicle runs quite well at 81,000 miles. The paint has been redone in the original yellow (finish code 3470-A according to the seller). It’s a well-equipped ‘Stang with power steering, electric top, décor group, and more.

The seller says that “thousands” have been spent on recent work and we’d like to know just what that entailed. But alas, that info isn’t included, and the photos are a bit scarce. But we’re told it runs and drives great and you won’t find a leak under it anywhere (that implies there may have been one). This is one sweet ride, but it is a ’70 non-Boss or Mach 1 Mustang.

Thanks. I didn’t think of that. I adjusted the write-up accordingly.

Sure looks like an attractive Mustang in good shape. But with only six long-range pictures, who really knows? Another one of those frustrating craigslist ads. The production data is probably from a Marti Report; how about giving us a look? I suspect the quoted number is how many convertibles had this drivetrain; that’s what the verbiage implies but it isn’t very clear. And “thousands” spent; when and where? The seller’s write-up does at least list certain options.

Off my “lazy advertising” soapbox now.

The production numbers may have come from a Marti report. They also could have come from Kevin Marti’s book Mustangs By The Numbers.

At that price I’d want the missing brake pedal pad replaced 🙄

I just purchased a 1970 Convertible 65K original miles, garage kept, 302 2 brl dual exhaust for $6K. Once we bypassed the fuel lines and unplugged the distributor cap, she fired right up . . . She needs a new radiator, gas tank, belts, hoses, brakes and tires and a paint job . . . No visible rust and no dents. The previous 2nd owner painted her yellow. She was originally candy apple red w/white top/interior. Hoping to get her on the road this spring :)

I drove this when he had it in palm springs CA and was asking $32k USD. It’s an honest used car with needs. Trans syncros, clutch, excess rear end ring and pinion lash, front end control arm bushings, etc etc. But is a rust free driver.

Seller sounds overanxious to me. And no necessary pics? C’mon.
