The Pontiac Firebird was in its third year of production in 1969, having joined with the Chevy Camaro two years earlier to do battle against the Ford Mustang in the “pony car” wars. This ’69 Firebird convertible is one of only 87 built with the 400 H.O. motor and 4-speed manual transmission. No mention is made as to whether the vehicle is original or restored, but either way, it looks like it was just unloaded from a time capsule at 46,000 miles. Located with a dealer in Milford, Connecticut, this beauty is available here on eBay for $85,000 (Buy It Now). Or you can submit an offer. Thanks for bringing this tip our way, T.J.!
Given that the Firebird was a bit dressier than the Camaro, the then-new car line competed with the also new Cougar from Mercury. For the first generation of production, more than 276,000 Firebirds were built, 87,000 in 1969 alone. Nearly 12,000 of those would be droptops, but for the data compiled by the seller, this particular car saw fewer than 100 copies built. That’s because it has the biggest displacement engine Pontiac offered in a Firebird that year, plus a floor-shifted manual which together added about $600 to the list price of a car that started at $3,000.
We don’t know the history of the seller’s Pontiac, just how it was put together. If it’s original, then the car has spent a good bit of the past 53 years under wraps. The average number of miles per year would average under 900. If it has been restored, no expense was likely spared because it looks as close to new as you could expect. The body is straight, and the Palladium Silver paint is gorgeous. The black convertible top looks great (though the canvas is a bit stretched) and the matching interior is quite inviting.
Besides the High Output (H.O.) engine, the driveshaft hooks to a 10-bolt performance axle. This Pontiac was built at the Norwood, Ohio assembly plant in June 1969, and included Rally II wheels, a hood tachometer, variable-ratio power steering, and power front disc brakes, and the custom wood steering wheel and rear spoiler may have been added by the selling dealer in Halifax, Pennsylvania. Notice on the replicated window sticker that the delivery charge was just $72!
The seller was kind enough to look up the projected resale values of cars like this per Hagerty. $104,000 would be for the nicest one on the planet, so perhaps the asking price is a “bargain”? The Firebird will come with documentation from PHS and the original owner’s manual. Suddenly, it’s the Summer of 1969 all over again!
Nice car, but just another car that most people on this site, like myself, will never be able to afford, and if you went into debt over it would you dare drive it like it was meant to be? At least its not 1 of 87 because it has special order floor mats and a vanity mirror…….
Question is, would you dare drive it at all, given the lunacy of erratic drivers who speed, blow through stop signs, text and who knows what else? It’s too nice and too expensive to turn into a door stop.
The price is good
I am willing to pay $90 k for this
But it has an added non stock rear spoiler
Un orginal exhaust
And the gas is so expensive
That i must decline on this purchase
The “performance” rear axle option cost $2.11 lol.
Very nice car. Not even close to the “nicest one on the planet” with far too many incorrect parts & color. It’d be priced right at about $50K.
North 40s or low 50s
Spoiled by the Camaro spoiler on the trunk…
The additional gauges under the ashtray are not OEM either.
For that price it should have original window sticker, original build sheet & protecto plate & original owners manual
And a full tank of Super.
$85,000? Someones been watching too many TV auctions.
Missing cocktail shakers
Wrong air cleaner, fuel line, and distributor cap
Aftermarket exhaust, radio, starter, Z28 spoiler, gage cluster, floor mats
Added hood tach, right side mirror.
No power top
No limited slip axle
Non original steering wheel
Nope. Nice car but not aywhere near an $85,000 car. Unless you value the HO and 4 speed at $45000.
One of my favorite cars. I owned a canary yellow Firebird 400 with American Racing wheels back in the early 70’s. It wasn’t a convertible though, but it was fast. Unfortunately I crashed it in a side swipe wreck that totaled it. I was going in excess of 100 mph on a 4 lane Blvd when a V.W squareback pulled out in front of me I swerved but I was going to fast to miss him. Everyone walked away unhurt.
God bless America
For that price, I won’t publicly say what it should do for me, and on a daily basis! But Barnfinds has found my achilles heel. My most favorite year, make, and model car of my youth and with my favorite style roof
Erich, I laughed out loud at your comment lol!
I went to this dealer and saw this beauty up close. It is pretty impressive. Very clean and really nice. The dealer site has a short video of it idling, and it sounds great! While it is a bit pricy, it does look the part!
