1 of 901: 1970 AMC AMX Project

The AMX was introduced in 1968 as a GT-style performance coupe whose close competitor may have been the Chevy Corvette. In reality, it was a Javelin with 12 inches taken out of the wheelbase along with the back seat. Sales numbers were not spectacular, and it was gone after 1970 as a standalone model. This final year AMX is a roller that’s also a project car. It comes with a spare period-correct 390 cubic inch V8 for the buyer to install. Located in Lawton, Oklahoma, this once-hot performance car is available here on eBay for $11,900 OBO.

AMC rolled out the AMX the same year as it entered the pony car wars by introducing the Javelin. While the AMX could be considered a muscle car, it would be the only one in the field without room for more than two people. Only 19.134 copies were built from 1968 to 1970, so AMC abandoned the car as a separate model, instead making it the performance version of the redesigned Javelin for 1971-74. The slightly restyled 1970 AMX turned in the lowest sales figures at just 4,116 units, and – of those – barely 900 had the combination of the 390 engine and an automatic transmission.

This project is being offered by a dealer who either specializes in these cars or the photos are from the owner. Other AMXs are lurking nearby, and we see the green AMX here (though the listing says blue) in both indoor and outdoor settings. Originally this car had factory air conditioning and came with the Go Pack option, though we don’t know how much of either is still around.

We’re told the machine has minimal rust but wears the front clip from a 1968 AMX. That suggests the car was in an accident some time back, yet the overall paint seems to match. To help right this wrong, the seller is including a ’70 AMX grill and ram air hood (but no fenders or bumper?). Though not photographed, the rest of the transaction includes a motor and M12 automatic tranny. The seller says the interior is very complete, but it will need refurbishing.

The OBO may mean that the price could be doable for this car even though it’s an automatic. If it isn’t too rusty and the front damage was mostly to the outside sheet metal. Since no VIN was ever stamped onto the engines an era 390 would be correct enough.

My dad was a big car guy and test drove new cars all the time. He also drove my mom mad because he also bought a new just about every year sometimes trading in the new car after a few weeks! I rode with him when he test drove a new 390 powered ’68 AMX and he always ran them out on the top end and it went 125 or so before dad let out of it. The reason he didn’t buy it was because wind noise was pretty bad with the windows up. He did buy a new 304 powered 1972 Javelin. Pretty car.
