1-Owner Garage Find: 1966 Plymouth Sport Fury

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The Sport Fury can be thought of as Plymouth’s answer to the Chevrolet Impala Super Sport. After being a one-year wonder in 1959, the name returned in 1962 for a longer run to 1971. Most Sport Furys were hardtops, so finding a convertible from 1966 is a rare find (only 3,418 were built). Located in a garage since 2002, this drop-top Mopar project is available from King George, Virginia, and here on Facebook Marketplace for $4,000 OBO. Once again, T.J. delivers in the tips department.

In 1966, Plymouth gave you no less than five iterations of its full-size automobile. Fury I, II, III, Sport Fury, and VIP were on par model-for-model with Chevy’s Biscayne, Bel Air, Impala, Impala SS, and Caprice. With the Sport Fury, you basically got a Fury III with a V8 engine and bucket seats. The seller’s Sport Fury meets that criteria with a 318 cubic inch motor and a black (the seller says green) interior with a console housing its floor-shifted TorqueFlite automatic transmission.

This ’66 Plymouth is a one-owner car that was parked in 2002 with 136,000 miles. We’re told the engine turns over but doesn’t go further due to what the seller believes is a defective fuel pump (easy fix). The seller says the car is in rough shape, though the photos don’t point to a nasty rust bucket. It should be restorable, though the seller doesn’t rule out its being used for parts. Since it’s a convertible, perhaps repairing it should be the goal.

Originally, the seller was asking $4,500, but you may get to take it home for less than four grand. The car has loads of power accessories (like electric windows), but we don’t know what works and what doesn’t. Besides a trailer, you’re going to need a winch to extricate it from its perch.

Boy, it looks decent in the photos, but they always look better in the photos, right?

Could be a fun car if it isn’t too far gone. And that door panel looks green to my eye.

Love the stacked headlights of the 60’s. Shame it’s only a 318, but it appears a reasonable ask for the condition.

The interior is dark green. Almost olive. I remember this color back in the day. One of my friend’s father had it in his Fury. This has potential to be refurbished and made into a nice driver. Hopefully someone will make the effort. GLWTS.
