11k Original Miles: 1993 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

This 1993 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible appears to tick the right boxes for potential buyers. It presents superbly, wearing one of the rarer paint shades available during that model year. It is original and unmolested and has spent its idle hours safely squirreled away in a warm and dry garage. It all seems positive, but there is one challenge facing the new owner. Its V8 engine springs to life the moment the key is turned, but it shuts down immediately. That suggests there is an electrical gremlin somewhere, but it hasn’t discouraged interested potential buyers from joining the bidding party.

Chevrolet followed what had become standard practice in 1993, offering Corvette buyers a choice of ten paint shades. This car’s original owner selected Bright Aqua Metallic, teaming the stunning color with a White soft-top. This shade isn’t the rarest from that model year, but with only 1,305 buyers selecting it, that represented a take-up rate of under 6%. Faulting this car’s presentation is challenging, with its overall condition consistent with the odometer reading of 11,500 genuine miles. The paint shines beautifully, and the top should improve once it is left raised for a while. The luggage rack is a practical feature, and the remaining trim and glass are excellent. The wheels exhibit some spots that should disappear if the winning bidder spends a few hours in the garage with a high-quality polish. Otherwise, this solid, garage-kept classic has no cosmetic needs.

The seller supplies no engine photos, and they also confuse matters when discussing the Corvette’s mechanical specifications. They state that it features a five-speed manual transmission, and unless someone has changed something, it should be a six-speed. The 5.7-liter V8 should generate 300hp and 340 ft/lbs, allowing the car to cover the ¼-mile in 13.7 seconds. Find a long enough stretch of straight road and the needle should top 160mph. So far, so good. The seller doesn’t mention verifying evidence for the claimed odometer reading, but the car’s overall condition makes it plausible. Okay, it’s time to draw a deep breath and confront what appears to be the only bad news. This Convertible hasn’t seen the road for a while, and it may require a specialist’s attention before that happens. The engine roars into life when the key is turned, but shuts down immediately. The seller believes the computer is telling the injectors to stop operating, and how difficult or expensive this fault is to rectify is pure speculation. However, it appears people are willing to take that chance. It is worth noting that as well as a weak battery, this Corvette retains its original tires. They have probably developed flat spots from sitting, but I would replace them due to age before I pointed this classic at a stretch of open road.

This Corvette’s interior further reinforces the mileage claim, because there is little deserving criticism. The Black leather seats are excellent, and there are no issues with worn carpet or broken plastic. Spending some time cleaning and detailing everything should make it sparkle, guaranteeing it will command attention. It is also loaded with almost every factory option offered by Chevrolet in 1993. The winning bidder receives climate-control air conditioning, power windows, power locks, power seats, power mirrors, cruise control, a tilt wheel, and the premium Delco/Bose stereo with a cassette/CD player.

The seller listed this 1993 Corvette Convertible here on eBay in Utica, Michigan. Twenty-three bids have pushed the price to a mere $7,105, which is above the reserve. That means it is days away from heading to greener pastures. We can only speculate on the electrical issue, and what it might cost to address. However, it seems people are willing to roll the dice on this low-mile survivor. Are you tempted to throw your hat into the ring, or is it too much of an unknown quantity?

Also a weak battery. Swap the Optispark for an upgraded unit, change the battery, and you’ll have a runner that will provide years of driving pleasure.

I am a real owner of a 1992 corvette with the original Opti to include a 1994 and 1997 Z28, zero issues with the Opti-Sparks ignitions……Imagine that!

I purchased a new 1994 Pontiac Trans Am in September 1993. It came with the LT1 with the Opti ignition. I kept the car for 16 years and never had any engine or ignition issues.

Likewise with my ’92 Convertible: Zero Optispark issues, I’ve started referring to it as the “Optispark Boogeyman”

Pretty color. The front wheels are on the wrong side of the car, but the tire shop can put them back on the right way when you buy new tires. You’ll have to decide what alternative tire size you want as the original size isn’t manufactured anymore. It’s OBD1 so brush up on your diagnostic skills, but it fires right up, a major plus.

Flip the front tires and that problem is solved. Had to do that on my ‘89 one time after tire shop goofed.

It’s going to need new tires, it’s rolling on the originals, 31 year old originals.

So long as a rat didn’t start chewing on things in there, could be a nice deal if it stays under 8k.

With ALL the great older muscle cars that have appeared on here with there info & stats I can sincerely say that NO WAY this car can post a 1/4 mile time of 13.7sec with only 300hp!

Actually, it probably could. Though I have repeatedly pointed out that this particular BF writer uses the optimistic computer-simulated performance numbers from automobile-catalog.com without attribution and without noting that they are in fact computer sims, Car and Driver’s test of a ’95 Corvette coupe with the 6-speed yielded a quarter-mile time of 13.7 seconds (Road&Track got 14.1). So the computer sims can be accurate on occasion, though they are more likely to be off, especially for older cars.

The root cause of the shutdown probably is because the car has been idle too long. If I were local to the car I would be heading over there with a good battery and fuel. This might be a good bargain. I like the color and the six speed.

I have a ’93 ‘vert. in the same color but w/ a tan interior.
But a black interior in the summer w/ the top down would be brutal.
    rims …. switch
I had to rebuild the headlight gears on mine for safety insp.

If you can buy this LT1 car for under 10g it would be an excellent bargain for a new b to the hobby.

I would be more concerned about verifying the transmission. If it does not have a ZF 6-speed keep looking for another Corvette.
