1-Of-118 K-Code Drop-Tops: 1965 Ford Mustang

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

For the official 1965 model year, Ford built nearly 560,000 copies of the hot new Mustang. But, per the seller, only 118 of them were convertibles with the potent K-code V8. That should include this Poppy Red edition with a 4-speed that may only have 33,000 miles. Located in Miami, Florida, as part of an apparent collection, this ‘Stang is commanding a premium here on craigslist at $125,000. Thanks, Mitchell G., for sending this tip our way!

The Mustang was just one of the automotive success stories on Lee Iacocca’s lengthy resume. From its introduction at the New York World’s Fair in April 1964, nearly 1.3 million were scooped up by buyers through the end of the 1966 model year. Scores of competitors quickly followed, yet the Ford would hold its top sales position well into the 1970s. If you checked the K-Code box on the 1965 order form, you got a 289 cubic-inch “Hi-Po” engine that cranked out 271 hp with solid lifters.

If you’re looking for a ’65 Mustang ragtop and money is no object, this car might be the one. Besides the killer motor, this vehicle also has a 4-speed shifter, but there is no mention of numbers matching, something that should be important at this price point. With a brief description and limited photos, you have to wonder why craigslist was chosen as the vehicle to market this car, a website where bargains usually get products sold.

We don’t know if this beauty is an original survivor or if it has been painstakingly restored. That is, except for the white interior, which we’re told is 90% from the factory (what’s the other 10%, carpeting?). Options include a power top, and we assume everything here works as it should. We also surmise that it’s a solid runner, but at $125k, how much would you really use it, opting to just look at it a lot instead.

Truly amazing, but I agree, at that price and number of miles, it is more of an investment, not a driver. That is too bad. Give me the same car, but just a standard 289 at a third the price. Now, that you could drive.

Looks like an outstanding Mustang. The ad, with its few pics and bad verbiage and spelling, is indeed strange; sketchy? “I need to sell the used lawn mower on craigslist, I think I’ll list the Mustang there too, for six figures.”

Even at Concours quality, I don’t know if the ask is reasonable unless it were a Shelby. Did Shelby even have a Mustang in 65? It is lovely to look at though, what an interior.

I wonder if any were built with a/c, generator, or ultra rare 13 inch 5 lug wheels!

Twice the money of a non K code 289 car. Keep the money in your pocket

Didn’t have numbers matching in 65, need to look at date codes. Heads numbers on the front and back off heads. Also just as important original carb and distributor. Especially for that price.

125K, six pictures and no documentation? The price is way too high, so the seller has to prove why it is worth it, if the seller is even legitimate. I would think a car with an asking price of 125K should have a properly aligned rear bumper. Something is off with this one.

Ok, so all of your comments are on the money, I too would think scam, for the price asking people usually put them through an auction house, have documentation yada yada yada. I can’t see anyone paying this much for something like this.

Outlandish price even for a K-Code Pony. Don’t see any options on the car, no “Pony Interior, not a GT model, no rally pac, no A/C….! Big money to start, $15K!

Now the seller was asking 10k I’d think scam. No this seller is overly ambitious about the worth of his car. Very nice Stan not 125k nice.
