Some would say that this Volkswagen Beetle-based kit car looks like a cartoonish Model T Ford. Honestly, I think it has a look all its own, albeit a bit cartoonish; it looks like a whole lot of fun! The Maxi Taxi is listed for sale here on Craigslist and is currently located in Buchanan Dam, Texas. The seller states that they have $6,500 in the car and implores you to “get close” to that with your offers-or offer a trade that doesn’t eat! Thanks to Barn Finds reader Jack M. for submitting this unusual find!

The Maxi Taxi, like the similar Mini Mark as well as the Citation, Sebring, and Creighton, was manufactured by Bremen Sport Equipment, a company founded in the mid-1960s by DeWayne Creighton and Omar Hostetter in a converted chicken coop (!) As best as I can tell, the Maxi Taxi was produced from around 1969 to the mid-1970s, with an estimated 1,000 kits and turnkey cars produced. Production ended when the company warehouse burned in either late 1974 or early 1975, and Omar went on to other ventures. DeWayne’s descendants have been active on kit car forums and are proud of what their father accomplished-you’ll note that despite the “dune buggy” appearance of the Maxi Taxi, it has functional doors and a removable hardtop. Commenters on forums praise the fiberglass work compared to other similar kits.

The seller tells us they are finding a new home for the car because they are the only member of the family who can drive a manual transmission vehicle. A sad comment on the state of the hobby, but I understand how it works. We can see that at least the upper part of each seat is in nice shape in this picture, although I’d really like to see the engine and a full interior shot. The seller says there are only 50 miles on the tires as well. The engine is a “great motor,” as the seller states it can hit 70 miles per hour on the highway. Not bad for those aerodynamics!

A little investigation found this Facebook group devoted to the Maxi Taxi that was founded in 2019, which features 402 members. That would be one heck of a survival rate if every member owns a Maxi Taxi (I’m sure that’s not the case). So what do you think of this kit car? Would you like to buy it and join the group? Or do you only have things that eat for trade?
