1974 Plymouth Gran Fury Sport Suburban 440 V8

Wow, what a wagon! I don’t know if I’ve said that before, and I’m a fan of station wagons. When I think of a Plymouth Suburban, I think of the late 1940s or early 1950s two-door model, but they would come back in the late 1960s and last until 1978. This 1974 Plymouth Gran Fury Sport Suburban is listed here on eBay in Arlington Heights, Illinois, and there is an unmet opening bid suggestion of $11,000 and no reserve after that.

The title is almost as long as this car is, but at about 19 feet, this car has a big presence. Check out that front bumper, that has to weigh as much as a 2017 Kia. This car looks amazing in most of the photos, and the seller mentions what they did to the exterior to get it to look this nice. Most of the paint has been buffed, but they say the woodgrain was toast, as this was a West Coast car. Unfortunately, under the woodgrain was damaged paint, so they had it stripped to bare metal under the woodgrain, painted those areas, and then recovered it with new woodgrain.

The Sienna Metallic paint appears excellent and is said to be original (other than under the woodgrain), and the whole exterior looks great in the photos. Plymouth offered the sixth-generation Fury and Gran Fury from 1973 for the 1974 model year, all the way until 1974… as in, just one model year. They are very rare to see today, and the Suburban, even more so. Seeing a Sport Suburban model has to be like finding a unicorn. A 19-foot-long, 5,000-pound unicorn.

We don’t know where on the West Coast this car is from, but clearly it wasn’t from the Pacific Northwest, which technically could be considered the West Coast. If it were, it would have preserved the interior much better than how this one appears, which is to say, somewhat burnt, cracked, and generally heat-damaged. That’s a bummer because the exterior sure looks great. The front seats, as you can see, are cracked, as is the dash, the door panels, and other areas, and the headliner appears to be missing, and the seller confirms that in their great description. The back seat looks perfect, however.

Ba-BOOM! There’s what everyone wants in their wagon, a 440-cu.in. OHV V8. Well, maybe not everyone, and with 250 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque, power is down quite a bit from the glory years, but still. Bragging rights alone, this is it. Backed by a TorqueFlite, of course, sending power to the rear wheels, this one has new valve cover gaskets due to the original ones leaking a bit, and it’s said to run and drive fine, but will smoke for a bit if you let it sit for a while. Any thoughts on this giant Sport Suburban?

Scotty you can just simply change it to…….. 460 minus 20….!!! Give us all a little math for today lol. Great wagon and with a little love in the interior it will be outstanding. I don’t think theres a lot produced with the 460 minus 20 V8 in them!!! ( Sorry couldn’t resist.)

Yes, exterior looks great, but the interior? It looks filthy.

Interesting find. Good info in the ad. I suspect the seller got the paint/woodgrain back in shape (after significant cost) and decided to stop there, as there are several things which still need attention.

To me, that attractive Sienna Metallic almost washes out the contrast of the woodgrain.

I agree Bob. Very true. Its a beautiful color and the woodgrain looks great. Yet, it does all sort of blend in together now that you mentioned it.

Nice choice by the original owner to option for the 440-4 over the standard 400-2 to help move along this boat..just under 5000lbs! Left the factory w 2.71 gears, 3.23⚙️ was available and welcome no doubt.

The full size Plymouth and wagon stuck around through 1977. In 1975 the “Fury” name was a Satellite replacement, and the full size Furys were called Gran Fury through MY 1977.
