We’ve only seen five examples of the 1977 Mercury Marquis here on Barn Finds over the years. The seller has this “Tu-Tone” 2-door posted here on craigslist in Longueuil, Quebec, Canada, right across the St. Lawrence River from Montreal, and they’re asking $16,200, which equates to $11,545 U.S. dollars. In looking at the other Marquis examples shown here, one was a wagon, and the other four were 2-door sedans like this one. Strangely, there haven’t been any 4-door sedans shown. Mercury called this the “Tu-Tone” paint option, and it’s Here’s a 1977 Mercury Marquis brochure. The Cream with Medium Gold Glamour Tu-Tone color combo is something my dad would have picked out. Our 1969 Plymouth Fury III sedan was this yellow color with a brown vinyl top.
This is a big car, slightly over 19 feet in length and well over 10,000 pounds! Just kidding about the weight, of course, but it looks like it. It’s actually around 4,700 pounds. The trunk photo is nice to have, but it doesn’t show as much as we’d like. Still, an A+ goes to the seller for the photos on this one, especially for a craigslist ad. They also show the underside while the car was up on a lift! This one appears to be wearing the optional Luxury Wheel Covers, shown on page 8 of this 1977 Mercury Product Facts Book.
As with the exterior, the interior looks outstanding, other than some cleaning needed on the thick carpeting. The second-generation Marquis was made for model years 1969 through 1978, and a major redesign occurred in 1973. The two-tone seats are a nice touch to match the two-tone (or tu-tone) exterior paint scheme, and they look almost perfect both front and rear. The seller says the paint is original, and they mention the “cloth” seats, but these aren’t cloth, are they? The brochure says that cloth and vinyl or all vinyl are available; it doesn’t mention leather as an option that I can see. I’m assuming these are vinyl seats.
The giant engine is Ford’s 460-cu.in. OHV V8 with 197 horsepower and 353 lb-ft of torque. It glides through a three-speed automatic, and power is sent to the rear wheels. Another 11/11 car (11 mpg, 11 seconds to 60 mph), this Marquis is said to have a new battery and starter, and everything works as it should. Any thoughts on this big Marquis Brougham?
