23K-Miles! 1979 Lincoln Mark V

The seller of this 1979 Lincoln Mark V nails it when they say that it’s “gorgeous”, there’s no doubt about that. They also say it’s in “excellent driver-quality condition”, even better. Perfect trailer queens are nice for car shows, but who among us wants to worry about actually driving their vintage vehicles on modern, texting-driver-filled roads? Not me, give me driver quality every time. Thanks to Rocco B. for the tip!

The Lincoln Mark V was made for three model years, 1977, 1978, and 1979 and they’re really the last of the exclusively two-door big Lincolns. I know that statement just caused a few folks to feverishly try to find an even bigger two-door Lincoln but I don’t think you’ll have any luck. The next-gen Mark VI came in a two-door sedan body style but it was well over a foot shorter.

The faux convertible top gives a bit of posh Florida flair to this Mark V and works well with the faux spare tire trunk lid. The seller says this white over red leather luxury two-door has just 23,000 miles, that’s low for being 45 years old now. It sure looks like a low-mile car, doesn’t it? I don’t see any glaring flaws on the exterior.

The beautiful red interior includes matching and great-looking red leather seating surfaces, red carpet, and what some of us thought was the best invention since electricity: the transmission hump caddy and cup holder. Remember those? I still have one in an old truck and it’s great, or at least good enough, which is basically my motto. The back seat looks like new as does the trunk. We don’t get to see the underside, but I’m hoping it looks as good as the rest of the car does.

The engine is Ford’s (here we go again) “400” V8 – which is actually a 402-cu.in. OHV V8 – with around 160 horsepower and 315 lb-ft of torque when new. It sends power through a three-speed automatic to the rear wheels and the seller says this car starts, runs, drives, and stops great. I don’t doubt that one bit. They have it posted here on craigslist in Willoughby, Ohio, just northeast of Cleveland, and they’re asking $10,900, or you can make an offer in person or on the phone. Here is the original listing. Hagerty is at $10,600 for a #3 good-condition Mark V and over double that for an excellent car. What’s your offer on this one?

I’m surprised it has the underpowered (for this car) 400. Most game with the 460.

The 460 was discontinued for 1979, and probably was discontinued for the previous year or two. 400 was the largest engine to be put in these Lincoln models.

Wrong, I had a ’77 Mark V with the 460… that car just floated effortlessly down the interstate.

’78 was the last year for the 460.

        My 1978 Givenchy series had the 460 … the speedometer only went to 85 but I matched a 450SL at 130 …

The 460 and the 400 were available engine options up until 1978.

1979 has only 1 engine available for the Mark V and the Town Car.

That would be the 400 2 barrel engine you see in this Mark V.

Nice Mark V. Given their clientele when new, many (like this one) led an easy life. Ten grand for a big cruiser, doesn’t seem out of line. Enjoy the days of effortless power steering, floaty but smooth ride, quietness, and…. presence.

    Thanks Scotty,

The hood is longer than a dining room table for 10. Someone pass the grey poupon please.

When I got my ’78 Givenchy, I traded in a ’77 Corvette … the first time I turned into an alley in Chicago I came close to taking out the front end …

So nice, and another beauty within a half hour drive. What is with NE Ohio and these cars? With so few miles rust hasn’t had a chance to develop but drive in the winter around here and it will. Did a quick check though and this beast gets seven and a half miles to the gallon, combined. Wow

Hmmm… my ’77 got much better mileage than that with the 460/4BBL carb averaged around 13mpg around town and on a trip from Delaware to Little Torch Key in Florida and back many moons ago, got a little over 17 on the interstate driving 65-70mph… similar to what my ’21 Tundra gets now (although not nearly as comfortable as the living room on wheels) lol.
