28k Original Miles: 1972 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

This 1972 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu ticks many of the boxes that enthusiasts consider essential when searching for a classic to park in their garage. It features a long-term ownership history, has led a sheltered life, and has a genuine 28,000 miles on the clock. Finding anything to criticize is almost impossible, suggesting that the seller may not have much trouble finding it a new home. I must say a big thank you to eagle-eyed Barn Finder Curvette for spotting the Malibu listed here on Craigslist in Newberg, Oregon. The seller has set their price at $27,000 OBO for this stunning gem.

The Second Generation Chevelle range was reaching the end of its production life by the time this Malibu rolled off the line in 1972. Chevrolet performed a few cosmetic upgrades, but with its replacement waiting in the wings, these changes were relatively minor. The paint shade on this beauty is slightly deceptive, closely resembling Cranberry Red from some angles. However, it is definitely stunning Orange Flame, a color contrasted by the White vinyl top. The seller has been the Malibu’s custodian since 1975, confirming that the car underwent a repaint in 1979. It is unclear whether this was when it received the updated hood and White stripes, but the condition of the period-correct Cragar wheels suggests that these were a fairly recent addition. The paint reflects its surroundings like a mirror, cloaking laser-straight panels. The vinyl looks excellent, and a garage-kept history has left this classic rust-free. I can’t spot any significant trim problems, and the glass is clear.

Classics with White interior trim always gain admiration, because it is a shade that sometimes doesn’t age well. This Malibu has received a new front seatcover at some point, but the rest of its vinyl is said to be original. It has avoided many of the problems that can afflict this type of trim, with no significant stains or signs of yellowing. The contrasting carpet is in good condition, while protection from long-term UV exposure has left the dash and pad looking excellent. The only aftermarket addition is a set of underdash gauges, and, as is the case with other changes, these could be easily removed to return the inside of this classic to its factory form.

Powering this Chevelle is a 350ci V8, bolted to a three-speed automatic transmission. This combination should offer an effortless driving experience, which is emphasized by the power assistance for the steering and brakes. If I were to mark this Malibu harshly, I admit that I am disappointed by the engine bay presentation. It doesn’t come close to achieving the same standard as the rest of the vehicle, which is surprising. There is also evidence of rattle-can work, with visible overspray on the intake. The seller is sparing with their information, not indicating whether they hold documentary evidence for the claimed odometer reading of 28,000 genuine miles. The fact that they have been its custodian for five decades means that such evidence may exist in the form of Service Records. The mechanical health is another mystery, although it would be fair to expect perfection for any Chevelle within this price bracket.

There is no denying that this 1972 Chevelle Malibu is a stunning vehicle, and if its odometer reading is confirmed by documentary evidence, it is an extraordinary find. The modifications made by the seller won’t appeal to everyone, but they are reversible if the new owner craves authenticity. That brings us to the subject of the price, which is well above the market average. Is that figure justified? Only time will tell, although I won’t be surprised if it finds a new home if the seller shows some flexibility. Do you agree?

Nice car,but with the White stripes and top,
it’s to much.I think that it would look so much better
    without the vinyl top.

If the car doesn’t have documentation for original miles why even mention it, it’s false advertising and some would say click bait. Everytime I see this I just scroll to where it says I’m not sure about the mileage, if not sure don’t mention it, just stick the facts you actually know abou the car. The sellers are wrong for this as well.

That’s a good price if the mileage and condition check out but the ad is gone now.

Agree with 59poncho ‘s comment!! Some people just can’t stop. It should be cleaned up or just leave it alone for someone else to tend to. It is clean on the outside!
