While we tend to think that the modern automotive industry is a shell of its former self, there are some vehicle classes that have endured. The classic van converted into a camper that doesn’t require a commercial driver’s license to operate is a model we’ve seen reimagined across a wide array of platforms, from Eddie Bauer edition Ram ProMaster conversions to the wildest Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 4WD conversions that cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. This 1988 Ford Econoline SportsMobile is the one that started it all, and this supposedly low-mileage example is listed here on eBay with bids to just over $2,000.
The reserve remains unmet, and I don’t blame the seller for holding it to a certain price. The seller is cautious to not state that he’s absolutely certain that it only has 30,000 miles as old odometers can be wonky. But it sure seems like that mileage is accurate, given the condition inside and out. Campervans tend to attract folks who want to essentially live inside (because, why not?), so finding one of this vintage that has more or less been preserved is a find. That goes for the exterior as well, with the original decals gently weathered but otherwise preserved.
Wow – what a time capsule. The original woodgrain paneling is extensive and in good shape. In perfect balance with the exterior, there are brown curtains and couch cushions. The woodgrain goes up into the pop-top camper, which is truly amazing. While there are signs of wear, it is all very minor and just what happens when a vehicle is actually used. There’s also a sweet period CB radio setup, along with power steering, power brakes, and factory air conditioning which will need a charge. And that couch you see here will extend out into a double bed.
There’s the couch extended out below the pop-top section with its sleeping platform. As you can see, the canvas side panels of the pop-top are in great shape. Oftentimes, that’s the one thing you have to repair on these old campers, but not here. The Ford is powered by a reliable 351 V8 paired to a sturdy C6 automatic transmission, and if the mileage is indeed as low as indicated here, it has many more camping trips left in its lifetime. Considering the cost of a new ProMaster or Sprinter conversion, this looks like an absolute bargain – and is infinitely cooler.
Another in the “half-baked” ideas group, like the VW, or the Z1, get one of these and wander aimlessly willy nilly around the country, spending money at every turn. Like the VW, I’ve been keeping track of these, just in case, and there are a glut of these. Once again, who’s to blame? Why Father Time, of course. Folks that had these are going or gone, and a familiar ring here. This is actually a very nice unit. From a time when these vans used basically pickup guts, and none better. Naturally, my biggest concern with older vehicles like this, is parts. I can just hear it now, in Bugtusle AutoPlace,”gee, a ball joint for an ’88 Ford van you say? By golly, it’s been a while”,,,and don’t think that doesn’t happen. Besides, local camping is far more predictable, and be a great unit.

I agree. There is a propane tank, electric connection and water fill port on the drivers side. But nothing inside to use them.
