330/4-Speed: 1966 Oldsmobile Cutlass

California and Arizona. Both are lovely states, and both possess the perfect climate for preserving classic steel. That is where this 1966 Oldsmobile Cutlass has spent its life. The paint might be baked, and the Olds might be begging for restoration, but it is a solid project candidate. Adding to the car’s appeal is the drivertrain, featuring the range-topping 330ci V8 and a four-speed manual transmission. I must say a big thank you to Barn Finder Rocco B. for spotting the Cutlass listed here on Craigslist in Phoenix, Arizona. If an affordable project candidate is your goal, the seller’s price of $4,500 might tick another box.

Oldsmobile launched its Second Generation Cutlass range in 1964, with the final cars rolling off the line in 1967. The range featured larger physical dimensions than its predecessor, while styling similarities were extremely limited. The original owner ordered this Cutlass in 1966, and life in the harsh sun has baked its Forest Mist paint. There is also plenty of emerging surface corrosion, but surprisingly little exterior penetrating rust. The underside carries similar levels of corrosion, although there appears to be floor rust visible in one shot. It isn’t extensive, and may require one new section, rather than complete floor pans. I believe that some trim pieces may respond positively to polish, while others require a trip to the platers or replacement. I can’t spot any glass issues and, overall, this Cutlass shows promise as a restoration candidate.

We’ve reached the point where we can discuss what I believe to be this classic’s trump card. Oldsmobile offered buyers several engine choices in 1966, but this car’s first owner selected the range-topping 330ci high-compression V8, delivering a factory-quoted 320hp and 360 ft/lbs of torque. Factor in the four-speed manual transmission and power steering, and this beauty would have been a blast to drive in its glory days. The level of corrosion across the engine bay suggests this Olds hasn’t fired a shot in a while. That is an assumption on my part because the seller provides no information about its mechanical condition in the listing. However, if the V8 turns freely, basic maintenance might be all that is required before it roars back to life.

The seller supplies only limited interior shots, and the nicest thing I can say is that it appears to be complete. Otherwise, the trim is as baked as the exterior paint, requiring a complete retrim to present acceptably. Considering where this Olds has spent its life, I am surprised that the first owner didn’t order it with air conditioning. It isn’t lavishly equipped, but the AM radio and the Hurst shifter poking through the floor promise the new owner driving pleasure once the Cutlass returns to its former glory.

This 1966 Oldsmobile Cutlass might need a mountain of work, but if the rust is as limited as the images suggest, a competent owner may be able to perform many of the required tasks in a home workshop. It isn’t the rarest classic on the planet. However, the engine and transmission combination promises an enjoyable driving experience when it returns to active service. The price is the icing on the cake. It has only been on the market for a few days, and I won’t be surprised if someone snaps up this Olds fairly quickly. Will that person be you?

    I suspect this won’t last long at that price. As Adam points out, there is a lot to like about this Olds.

    (I like watching the videos of people getting these dormant cars running again. This would be a good candidate.)

    Featured on this site March 15th, it had already been listed on CL for a few weeks. At least this time the seller didn’t include pictures of it obviously sitting on a trailer. It’s a major project, but it’s complete and a 4spd. It may eventually find a buyer close to the asking price.
