343/4-Speed: 1968 AMC AMX Go Package

Like many models from this manufacturer, AMC’s AMX spent a considerable period in the automotive wilderness. However, with values climbing faster than the market average, now could be the ideal to park one in your garage as a future investment. This 1968 model could be a strong contender, and I must say a big thank you to Barn Finder numskal for spotting this excellent survivor listed here on Craigslist in Placerville, California. The seller’s price looks extremely competitive, so potential buyers may need to act before someone else snaps up this classic.

AMC unveiled the AMX for the 1968 model year, and while the first impression is that it is a pony car, the company had Chevrolet’s Corvette in its sites with this two-seat sports car. Sales were not all that AMC hoped, with only 6,725 buyers handing over their cash to take one home in 1968. That is well short of the tally achieved by the Corvette, and after a slight improvement in 1969, sales dropped to a point where the company discontinued the AMX as a standalone model at the end of 1970. The first owner ordered this car in Hialeah Yellow, which was 1-of-14 paint colors available that year. Its presentation is extremely tidy, with no significant paint or panel abnormalities. The seller doesn’t mention a restoration history, opening the possibility that this AMX could be a genuine survivor. There is no evidence of rust, although with AMC focusing heavily on prevention strategies, this is no surprise. The trim and glass are in good order, and the factory Magnum 500 wheels look spotless.

Buyers could order their 1968 AMX powered by 1-of-3 engines, with this car’s first owner selecting the 343ci V8 offering an excellent compromise between performance and economy. The engine’s 280hp and 360 ft/lbs of torque feed through a four-speed to a “Twin Grip” rear end which was an integral part of this classic’s Go Package. This option also brought an upgrade to power-assisted front disc brakes, while the power steering will be welcomed by the new owner. The ¼-mile ET of 15 seconds and a top speed of 111mph may not seem impressive, but those figures satisfied most owners. The seller supplies no information regarding the car’s numbers-matching status or its mechanical health. However, their use of the term “good condition” in their listing suggests the news should be positive.

The seller’s interior shots and the listing are short on detail, making it unclear whether this AMX features any interior creature comforts or aftermarket additions. However, it looks stunning trimmed in Black vinyl that shows no evidence of wear or distress, and the carpet is spotless. The dash and pad have survived remarkably well for a warm-weather classic, with its current location making it surprising that the first owner didn’t order this AMC with air conditioning. The overall impression is that this interior needs nothing.

AMC deserved greater success than it experienced, with cars like this 1968 AMX demonstrating the company’s adventurous nature. This gem presents well, is loaded with desirable options, and the asking price appears competitive. If an AMC classic is on your Wish List, could this AMX be a strong contender?

these are special vehicles I’ve come to lately (mostly thru this site). Right
sized & country of origin, fair to good looks, not into ‘muscle’ but this one enters my interest thru that door, collectable (as a note in automotive history/current-cy & currency)…
I could daily it w/automatic & 258 or 304 but they never came in it. The model w/o back seat would B fine (even a single bucket as to how I travel) so would frnt bench. They hatch is a great spice thrown into the sauce as to utilitarian nature (wrk or play benefits). I had one sedan like this (well, not like This) a 2nd gen ventura (dwn szed) w/a hatch and it was stupendous (also the 350, auto).

I might even dress differently when drivin it aahahaha
But ‘yellow’ would B 1st thing gone (No vehicle should show the color).
