350 V8 Daily Driver: 1971 Chevrolet Camaro

The second generation of the popular Chevy Camaro debuted for 1970, but it was several months late in coming due to production delays (this affected the Pontiac Firebird as well). But the end was result was a sleeker looking design that would last 12 model years before another major change. This ’71 Camaro is a good running car that only wants for some cosmetic improvements, but there’s no hurry to get that work done. Located in Las Vegas (aka “Lost Wages”), Nevada, this Chevy is available here on eBay where the no reserve bidding has reached $7,801.

Although the new Camaro was considered an improvement by some, it wouldn’t enjoy the same sales success as its predecessors. This was due in part to a waning interest in muscle cars that spilled over pony cars into automobiles like the Camaro. The extended production run of 1969 resulted in 243,085 units. On the other hand, the abbreviated production season of 1970 would see only 124,901 assemblies by comparison. What is a bit surprising is that the second-gen car didn’t bounce back in its encore year as the 1971 Camaro saw even fewer builds at 114,630 cars.

The seller’s Camaro is equipped with a good running 350 cubic inch V8 engine and a smooth shifting automatic transmission. But the seller doesn’t mention if either is original to the car, for which no mileage estimate is provided. The engine compartment is sharp looking, with aftermarket valve covers and air cleaner. The Chevy motor sports a new Edelbrock intake, carburetor, distributor, headers, exhaust, fuel pump and the car a new gas tank. The whole thing has received a recent tune-up and a new battery, so the vehicle may be good to go most anywhere.

The exterior is far from perfect with some dings, dents and fading of paint. But we’re told the sheet metal is all original, reflective of a lack of rust. Photos provided of the undercarriage show an equally clean workspace. The seller says everything opens and closes properly, yet the hood doesn’t look to fit quite right up by the hinges. The glass seems to be okay except for a cracked windshield. The interior has been the subject of some attention with a new dash pad, tilt steering column, aftermarket steering and a gauge package. The driver’s seat fabric needs fixing, but that may be about it where the occupants hang out.

Put all this together and it’s a car that you could drive and fine-tune the cosmetics as time and money permit. The new US Mag wheels of varying sizes with new Cooper Cobra tires will carry the buyer a long way in the meantime. The seller has provided a walkaround video of the car that is certainly worth checking out. According to Hagerty, one of these Camaro’s in Good condition is a $14-15,000 car, so this one looks to be trending in the right direction.

Wow, it’s jumped to$15,200 with 5 hrs. to go. I thought someone was going to get a bargain, butI guess not. Still this is a nice Camaro, and so far the price of admission is fair.
