400 V8 Swap: 1968 Pontiac Firebird

General Motors responded to the launch of the hugely successful Ford Mustang “pony car” with not one but two options in 1967. These were the Chevy Camaro and its corporate sibling the Pontiac Firebird.  The cars were little changed going into 1968, with the most noticeable being the addition of side marker lights and the absence of vent windows. This ’68 Firebird has been sitting outside for three years and runs but is going to need a lot of cosmetic work. Located in Clearbrook, Minnesota, this project is available here on eBay where the bidding stands at $4,700.

One could argue that the Camaro was designed to compete against the Mustang, while the Firebird was targeting the also-new-for-1967 Mercury Cougar. But the Cougar was more focused on creature comforts while many products built by Pontiac were about performance. In the case of the seller’s car, performance was not the goal as it was originally built with an overhead cam Inline-6, different from what Chevy made available to Camaro buyers. In 1968, Pontiac delivered more than 90,000 Sport Coupes and 18,500 OHC sixes.

We’re told this Firebird has a 400 cubic inch V8 under the hood where the inline-six once lived. Perhaps it was swapped because the old motor gave out or a prior owner wanted a lot more giddyap. It was parked in 2019 (or earlier) and the grass has started to grow up around it. But we’re told the car runs but doesn’t stop. It’s going to need a new set of brakes at a minimum.

According to the cowl tag, this Pontiac was painted white when it left the factory, and traces of that color are present in the trunk. The current burgundy/maroon finish has outlived its usefulness and both rear quarter panels are in bad shape, especially the one on the driver’s side. The interior was probably black in color, to begin with, but the rear seat is the only part of the upholstery that’s now white. A lot of work is needed here, but since the original color and motor are gone, you could probably do whatever you wanted and not give up any future value.

I’m surprised the 65 GTO front seats fit in the car!

That means they would also fit in a Camaro, but i bet there was never even ONE camaro with pontiac seats, let alone one with a pontiac modified chevy overhead cam 6. lol

If it doesn’t stop I’m hoping for power brakes when then they fix and replace everything.
Doesn’t look like power steering either.
    Your extremely basic Firebird.

A pretty basic Firebird indeed, but it does have power steering. It also had factory AC as well. The power steering pump is mounted just below the alternator, somewhat hidden by the upper radiator hose. Sold at $4700.
