Serious Muscle: 1972 Dodge Challenger 408 6-Pack!

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Don’t let the fender stickers or air cleaner markings fool you. This is not a Dodge Challenger T/A which came with a 340 V8 and triple 2-barrel carburetors. This car is something of a hybrid as it has a 6-pack set-up but sitting on top of a rebuilt “Stroker” 408 cubic inch V8. That makes it an interesting automobile that can be found in Tacoma, Washington, and is available through a dealer here on craigslist for $17,500. It’s said to run well and is in fair condition cosmetically. Thanks for this cool Mopar tip, MattR!

The 1970-74 Challenger was Dodge’s entry in the “pony car” wars, which was ironically slowing down about the time they finally got involved. The car got off to a great sales start at first, but interest dwindled as the muscle car scene began to retract in the 1970s. One special version of the Challenger was the T/A, built only in 1970 as a companion to the cars running that year in the SCCA Trans-Am series. Those cars had a 340 V8 with triple carbs that produced a conservative 290 hp. The seller’s car is a quasi-throwback to that special edition, but only as far as a few graphics are concerned.

This ’72 Challenger left the factory with a 318 V8, one of 15,175 copies to do so that year. At some point, that engine flew the coop and has been replaced by a low-mile (5,000?) rebuilt 408 Stroker V8 that has an Edelbrock manifold with a 6-pack set-up and air cleaner like the one found on the T/A.  The carburetors are said to be “fresh” (also rebuilt?), and we’re told the car runs and stops as it should. This Dodge originally had factory A/C but that too is now gone.

The seller bought the car you see here to restore a few years ago and has never gotten around to it, so it’s someone else’s turn. The body seems fine with minimal rust and we’re told the driver’s side floorboard perhaps has the worst of it. The interior is original and mostly good except for a crack in the dash pad and a busted seam in the back seat. Although this Dodge is not stock and that usually hinders resale value, for the money this one is in better shape than many we’ve seen here on Barn Finds. And the 408 6-Pack is not something you’re going to see every day.

Rats…I was hoping it would be a 225 slant six three on the tree. I’ll keep looking!

Oh my god! A running mopar without a monstrous price tag? Where are the holes rusting threw the back quarters and floor pans? The engine still in it? Total chaos! Cats and dogs, living together. It the end of times!
Seems like a deal to me.

Have you looked at any Barn Finds Mustang or first gen Camaro listings ?

I haven’t seen a rattle can paint job in quite a while. Looks like it might be a little crunchy underneath too. Still, the 4″ stroke in a 340-360 is supposed to be wild setup that I hope to try someday soon.

At least 2 large dash cracks (I guess a budget repair could be a Dashcap). The factory A/C has not been ‘removed’, just butchered. Still has A/C dash / controls. The other components are easy to come by and not the end of the world to install, That automatic is a problem, since converting a Mopar from auto to manual is the most difficult of the major makers. If the current owner has not converted to the T/A quick ratio steering box, that is mandatory. Otherwise… interesting.

This looks like a great candidate for a driver. Change all the fluids, get a mid level repaint, repair the floor and clean up the interior. Very cool.

Seems like a fair deal, and yes they are a dealer.

I have to agree, this appears to be worth the asking price. 1: it runs. 2: it stops. 3: 340/6pack. 4: no giant rust holes. 5: decent tire/wheel combo that is actually included. Underside actually looks pretty solid from the limited photos. This should sell easily for asking price.

    408 is a 360 30 over with a 4 inch crank.
