426 Hemi Equipped: 1970 Plymouth Road Runner

1970 was the last year for the first generation Plymouth Road Runner, and what a great 3 year run this car had from 1968 through 1970.  The 1970 model featured a new front and rear end but still had the same basic body as the 1968 and 1969 models.  1971 began the second generation of Road Runners, with some drastic body-style changes, and although these cars have some good things going for them it’s just hard to beat the classic looks of 1968 through 1970 models.  If you’re in the market for a 1970 Road Runner that’s in great condition and ready to drive or show, this may be a good car for you.  Located in Union Dale, Pennsylvania, it can be seen here on eBay with a current bid of $64,100 and the reserve not yet met.

This Road Runner began life as a 383 car, but during its three and a half year rotisserie restoration gained a 426 Hemi Chrysler factory crate motor.  There is no mention of a fender tag, so we don’t know much more information about what else this car came with from the factory.  What we do know is that it now has an A833 4-speed transmission with a pistol grip shifter, a Dana 60 rear end with 3:55 gears, and an air grabber hood.  The seller states that the car has only been driven about 30 miles since the restoration was completed.

The car retains all original sheet metal and floorboards, and being from Arizona was definitely a plus in this department.  The seller claims that the Hemi Orange paint is flawless, and looking at the many photos provided it would be hard to dispute this point.  The body also features dust trails along the sides, an option that was only available on the 1970 model.  Looking inside, we have a very nice-looking black interior with a bench seat, and everything we can see appears to be in exceptionally good condition.  There are also some photos of the underside of the car, and it would be hard to find fault with anything underneath.

So what we have here is a car that looks like it needs nothing except a new owner!  The workmanship and quality of the restoration leave little to be desired, although I might have to remove that blank plate next to the speedometer and install a Tic Toc Tach.  This car just looks nearly perfect from every angle, and I have a feeling that the seller has put a pretty high reserve on it.  What are your thoughts on this Road Runner?  How much higher than the current bid do you think would be a reasonable price to pay?

The bench seat and the stick shift always makes for a fun time with three in the front.

A gorgeous Road Runner. There was one a lot like this in a oddball movie, “Brewster McCloud”. The Road Runner was one of the best parts of the movie. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vBlV-Nt_3js

It’s a dirty job, but someone has to do it. There’s a serious nit to be picked with this writeup: This color is never Hemi Orange on a Plymouth.

Just as Pontiac built thousands of Carousel Red Judges but not a single one in Hugger Orange, Plymouth sold only Tor-Red Road Runners, not any in Hemi Orange.
