429 V8 Survivor: 1969 Ford Galaxie XL GT

1960s muscle car mania wasn’t limited to just mid-size cars. You could buy a performance-oriented version of the full-size Galaxie 500 if you wanted, and it was called the XL GT. Your body style choices were limited to a SportsRoof hardtop and a convertible, but who wanted a 4-door sedan with a 429 cubic inch V8 anyway. These brutes were good for 360 hp and 480-lbs.ft. of torque, so you had to watch your lead foot. Located in Albuquerque, New Mexico, this ’69 XL GT is said to be rust-free and run great and is available here on craigslist. The asking price is $12,500, but that’s negotiable. Thanks to our friend, rex m, for another great tip!

The XL GT wasn’t your ordinary Galaxie 500. They came equipped with power front disc brakes, a competition suspension package, a larger front anti-roll bar, a 3.25:1 rear axle ratio, GT badging, simulated mag-style wheel covers, and wide-track tires. While a 390 V8 was standard, buyers could opt for a 429 Thunder-Jet engine like the one said to be in the seller’s car.

All full-size Fords were redesigned for 1969, and the XL GT was no exception. They were built now using a perimeter frame layout. XL production would top 62,000 copies for the 1969 model year, though we haven’t found any numbers for the GT version of the car, with or without the 429 option. At 73,400 miles, the seller portrays this edition as being a survivor. From what we can tell, its blue paint appears to be in decent (but not perfect) condition and rust may be limited to a bit of surface rub in the trunk.

We can’t verify the 429 said to be under the hood as no photograph is provided. And the interior may be okay, but it’s hard to tell with the oversized aftermarket seat covers over the front bucket seats. But the back seat, dash pad, and carpeting all look to be fine. “Time capsule” may be an optimistic description of the car, but no glaring issues suggest that the next owner is going to have a lot of work to do — at least anytime soon.

Flipper special but still not a bad price with a little negotiation on a rare beast

Not commonly seen. Would be something unique to bring to shows. Doesn’t look bad. I always thought the engine call-out integrated into the front side marker was cool, I also like the “mag-style” wheel covers. I hope someone gets it and spruces it up.

Big block and a decent 3.25 gear, with the select-shift auto move out real nice i bet.

Not true! My dad had a ’70 Galaxie 500 when I was a kid. Drove him nuts reaching across to change the station while he was driving!

Would be even better if the HVAC controls were also to the left of the driver – imagine a spoiled passenger from today getting in this car, expecting his or her OWN zone climate controls, & power windows & video screens & a much smaller & lighter door & a mirror on it too.
I’m pretty sure i could make seat covers myself that would fit better than these “modern” colorless ones.

I LIKE IT. Had a old boss who’s wife had a DROP TOP like this. Gold and Black. I Love It as a 16 year old. She use to leave outta work and you could still hear the SMITTY’s a block away. The Verts WERE cool but I’ve always liked having a roof over my head. It a little too far away but I hope who ever get’s it DRIVES IT.

Friend in HS drove his Dad’s ‘69 XL with 429. Impressive car. Not sure about 429s in a ‘69 4 door, but another friend’s Dad bought a really nice ‘70 LTD 4 door hardtop with a 429 during the gas crisis for $1000.
