44k Original Miles: 1987 Chevrolet Camaro IROC-Z

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

This 1987 Camaro IROC-Z is a one owner vehicle that is claimed to have only covered 44,000 genuine miles. It has been owned by a fastidious individual, and it is now up for sale. You will find the Camaro listed for sale here on eBay. It is located in Brooklyn, New York, and is being sold with a clear title. At the time of writing, bidding has reached $4,700.

The owner describes the condition of the car as pristine, and first impressions are quite good. The paint looks good, and there are no obvious scrapes or dings to report. One thing that doesn’t quite gel with me is the rubbing strip on the passenger door. It doesn’t line up with its counterpart on the front fender, which I do find a bit strange. The other thing that is noticeable, and it is not something unique to this car, is the color inconsistency between metal panels and plastic, such as the bumpers. This is something that is peculiar to cars of this era, and it is something that is less prevalent today, as paint technology has improved.

The interior of the Camaro is basically immaculate, and when you get an insight into the owner, you can understand why. The owner actually fitted the car with plastic floor-mats over the top of the original mats. This was to ensure that the original floor-mats didn’t become dirty or stained, and protected the originality of the vehicle. The car also comes fully loaded, with its equipment including leather interior, deluxe cargo area with rear shade, T-Top with original storage bag, split-folding rear seats, rear-hatch defroster, factory-ordered hatch louvers, power drivers seat, power windows, power locks, power mirrors, cruise control, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, optional stereo with 6-band equalizer and cassette, and a power antenna.

The Camaro is fitted with the 305ci TPI engine and automatic transmission. The car has recently been fitted with a new battery, and it also has fairly new Falken tires fitted all round. The owner says that the car runs well, and it drives and tracks straight and true. The car is also fitted with a Posi-traction rear end, G92 performance axle package, 4-wheel disc brakes, and a heavy duty oil cooler.

This 1987 IROC-Z appears to be in quite good condition, and it also seems to have been well cared for. Values on these show little consistency at present. I have seen original examples with higher mileage selling for $12,000, while I have also seen ones with lower mileage, but having undergone a repaint, selling for $22,000. However, the average price for one in this sort of condition seems to be around $16,000 at present. It will be interesting to see what this one sells for.

Love the colour on this one… but would much rather see a cloth interior, that seat colour is not doing it for me.

Worse, this is the peanut cam version of the LB9. Manual cars got the 215 horsepower hot cam version but automatic cars got the 190 horsepower detuned version from 1986.

I’m surprised that with this level of equipment, it didn’t have the L98 5.7, especially since it also has performance options like the oil cooler, four-wheel disc brakes, and G92 axle. Very odd option choice, and unfortunately not one which will make the car more desirable.

Fortunately for the owner, yellow is a pretty desirable colour on these and it has the rattly and leaky t-tops that people inexplicably love. So it should sell for a decent sum.

There is a lot of acronyms for these. This one from Brooklyn seems fitting.

Is it legal to drive this car without a mullet?

Just remove the T-tops, pop in a Poison cassette and relive the 80s

Better if it had the 350…uhmm..the 5.7, those ran pretty strong for a new car back then. I really never cared for this generation of Camaros.

Returning to the car….. I’m a Ford guy, but I like this Camaro because it is clean and well-maintained and nicely equipped and in a less-common color combination.

A friend of mine had one of these back in the day in red. He picked me up to go somewhere with it and at 6′-6″ I was surprised at how little room there was in the front seat. Head was hitting the roof and knees were hitting the dash. Glad we weren’t going on a road trip!
I fondly remember the IROC Racing series. First real “spec” series that I became aware of.

I wonder why t-tops are not available on new camaros – can’t be cause of roll over laws – they are still making convertibles.
Your head probably would hit the roof in a 1st gen & with that 1’s big steering wheel & limited seat movement away from the wheel, it would be very uncomfortable driving one – for a very tall driver.
      I’m 6 foot & it’s a tight fit in my friend’s car.
Best bet?: a 2nd gen firebird – dash does not have the shin hitting protrusion on lower dash that 2nd gen camaros have. & lots of leg & head room – up front.
I wonder – with those huge shock towers on this 3rd gen & all gens since, will a big block fit & would plugs be a nightmare to reach, like on some big engine early mustangs?

I am glad to see these cars doing well.

When I buy this car, I will send it to the US for sale. He wants half of what this one is currently at. It is an ’85 model though.

This shade of yellow was only offered from 85 to 87 then it was dropped due to poor sales. You could also order a yellow Z28 which had the lower silver body skirts which really looked weird. Always liked this era IROC Z- Z28-Trans Am. Just some mild mods really wake up the Tuned Port Injected models. Total respect for these cars as everyone wanted to own or at least be seen in one when they were new.

Agreed. Foose did some poor car in chrome yellow and silver and I thought “Who in H thinks silver and yellow go together ?” They’re not complementary at all.

I like the car, but without the 350, I am not a buyer. I watched the driving video on Ebay and was not impressed. Why didn’t the guy take the rattling stuff out of the center console??? Detracted from the video. Currently at $9,000. There are a lot of these out there, even an 1985 Z28 with 43,000 miles for $5,600. Buyers better check the market or they might be overpaying for this one.

I’ve owned plenty of Chevys, including earlier and later Camaros.
I’ve always had bad luck with Fords so not a big fan.
However, if I had a choice, I’d pick a Fox body Mustang over this era Camaro.

I owned this exact color/optioned car in 89-92, I several of the earlier versions of this body style and the only one I owned that had any power at all was the 82 HO car I had and saying it had power was using the the term liberally at best !
