46k-Mile Survivor: 1977 Cadillac Sedan De Ville

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

In the 1960s and 1970s, Cadillac built some of the largest (and most luxurious) automobiles around. That was until 1977, when General Motors began downsizing some of its cars to be more fuel efficient. They included the C-body De Villes, which were the mainstay of Cadillac’s product lines. From that first year of “smaller is better” comes the seller’s Sedan De Ville, which looks practically new from several angles. From Hopewell, Virginia, this beauty is available here on Facebook Marketplace for $12,990. This Caddy is a tip brought to us by Dennis House.

The De Ville series first appeared in 1949 and became a regular in the lineup through 2005. The smaller fifth generation arrived in 1977 with some startling changes: they lost nine inches in length, 4 inches in width, and several hundreds of pounds in weight. This enabled Cadillac to switch to a smaller 425 cubic inch V8 (from a 500 CI), which only produced 10 fewer horsepower. All this added up to fewer dollars spent at the gas pump.

Because the interior space of the new Cadillacs in 1977 was comparable to that of the 1976s, an all-time sales record was set, including more than 95,000 Sedan De Villes like this one. This sweetheart of an apparent survivor has less than 47,000 miles, and the seller says it runs and drives quite well. We’re told the car has been “freshly serviced,” but does that go beyond a basic oil change?

Other than the color of some exterior plastic pieces not quite matching, it would be hard to fault what we see. The paint and vinyl roof look quite nice, and the interior appears like it’s hardly been used. All the goodies, such as the factory air and electrical accessories, work as they should. If you’re looking to ride in style at a fraction of the cost of a new Caddy, does this one float your boat?

    Headliner is sagging.

That’s typical for caddies of this vintage as far as I can see, if it’s not sagging it’s been probably replaced already. It also seems that rear courtesy lights on the passenger side don’t work.

…And what color is it anyway? Looks gold to me. Despite its small flaws, it’s still a nice car for a guy like me who’s actually gonna use it as the daily driver it was meant to be. $12K
though? Take him 9 or 10K and you’ll own it.

1976….. the epitome of Cadillac style and size.
I was so disappointed when the ’77s came out. These were not Cadillacs. Not after the ’76s.
Smaller, narrower, taller, (so much for longer, lower, wider of the 60s)
Complete with window frames and B pillars. Is hate too strong a word? I really hated these. They got even worse in 1985 when Cadillac went to front wheel drive on all models.
To say I still hate them even now is a good assessment.
Except for a few special models and years, Cadillac pretty much died after 1976 in my book.

How about those rwd hot rod wagons Cadillac put out Angel. Stick shift and I believe the hp was around 500

Hot rod, Stan? I know Cadillac did commission a few factory station wagons but most were aftermarket conversions and most were from the 50s, 60s and 70s. Not too much after that. Along with the station wagons there were also the “gentlemens pickup truck.” The Mirage i think was one of them. Memory is going fast. And they had
    an actual tailgate.
Are those the ones you are talking about, Stan or something else?

Stan is referring to the CTS-V Sport Wagon that came out between 2009 – 2014. I really like small performance wagons, so these were on top of my wish list. They had close to 600HP and 0-60 of 4 seconds.

Hi Angel I’m talking about the last 10 yrs or so .. Cadillac CTS-V cars.
They are wicked machines. Rare as hens teeth w stick shift. But kudos to Cadillac for offering manuals.

Wow how does anyone not know about the V-series cars? Especially those (manual) wagons. Some ppl must really have their head stuck in 1976 sand…

Oh yes, Stan, I love those CTS-V station wagons on the bucket list. As I mentioned in my post there are a few models and years past 1976 that I’d make exceptions for and those are definitely one of them
Cadillac did great in the early 2000s around 20 years ago. The CTS-Vs, the wagons, the XLR and the Escalade EXT. And in true Cadillac fashion, they got rid of all of them. Don’t know who’s running the show at Cadillac but they need to be fired, bonuses returned and hire me! LOL

Angel, in 2008, they made an XLR-V. They sold only 392 of them and they had a supercharged Northstar with 443 HP.

One of them just sold on Hagerty Auctions for 25K.

    @DD

Thank you DD for your input and sarcasm. I’m 72 years old and the first thing to go is memory, then hearing, then eyesight.
You might want to remember that when criticizing someone.
I see you’re not a member, you might want to look into that so you have an idea of what’s going on in the barn.

A little bit thin skinned aren’t we Angel? Guys like that go after people with insults to make themselves feel better. DD,
how dare you insult my friend that way. She has a right to her
opinions just like you have. You wanna come at someone, then come at me! Being disabled, I’ve learned to deal with people like you who berate others to cover your own inadiquacies. The lady deserves your respect not your jeering or whatever you call it these days. I found your post to be both distasteful and disgusting. If you have something legitimate to say, then by all means chime in. There’s an ear for what you say here, but keep it tasteful and don’t make fun of my friend Angel, and you’ll have no problems from me. I can get along with anyone, just don’t push my buttons. And with that being said, let’s get back to what we all came here for–talking about old cars and visiting with friends for awhile.
    Nuff said.

    Sorry, Ken,
It’s been a rough couple of days. I’m usually not so “thin skinned” as you put it and maybe DD is right. I kind of lost interest in Cadillac after 1976 except for those few special models and years. Can’t remember everything.
    Please accept my apology, DD.
    And thank you, Ken.

No honey, everyone has something they like and yours happens to be Cadillacs. Like you, I like the older models better than the newer ones. As a former car builder, I like the older Caddy’s better because guys like me can still work on them without having to take them in to a repair shop where they charge you out the ass to tell you what’s wrong with your
car. That’s why, if I have it in me to build one more car, it will indeed be an older model that’s tastefully upgraded for safety
and reliability. And yes dear, I’ve been looking at that ’54 Plymouth sedan I saw here yesterday. The price is definitely
right for an old fart like me to rebuild into a really nice car. Only thing is that I have no space to keep it and no money to
ship it here to Florida. So in my head, I lay the whole thing out just in case things change and I do get to build it. I’d even invite our young friend DD to help me where he could to get his hands dirty and learn a great deal about cars in the process.
I think that his dislike of older Caddy’s comes from not being
taught right. He’s obviously a gen Z kid who only knows how to turn the key and drive the car–and absolutely nothing about how to keep one running. Maybe if he learns how to
maintain a car, he might even grow to like old Caddy’s someday and maybe wanna build one himself. And on the insult thing, glad to help you out. I didn’t care much for his mocking demeanor either. I can see that his parents didn’t teach him how to work and play well with others. And maybe if he can learn that, he’ll grow to be a much better person down the road. Sure hope they get that chat room thingy open soon. Can’t wait to talk to you about stuff off the site and tell you stories about life on the road and send you pictures of my latest art projects with you and everyone else
here. Happy birthday darling, and remember I’m not that far behind you💋

I actually saw one in NJ around 2007/2008. It was black and I wanted to approach the driver but it was 2 a.m. at a walk up ATM & decided I didnt want to get shot!
