48k Mile Convertible: 1965 Plymouth Satellite

Plymouth rolled out the Satellite in 1965 as an up-market version of the Belvedere, filling a role similar to the Sport Fury in the senior line-up. It was reserved for just hardtops and convertibles and could be gotten with any Plymouth engine except the Slant-Six. The nameplate would enjoy a run across two generations and through 1970. This ’65 convertible is a gorgeous example of the car and may have less than 50,000 miles on it since new. It’s being offered by a dealer in Euclid, Ohio and available here on eBay where a no reserve auction already has it at $8,100.

This is a nicely equipped ’65 Satellite, completed with a 383 V8 engine (325 hp), TorqueFlite automatic transmission, and power-assisted steering and brakes. It’s a beautiful droptop that is finished in off-white with a “touch” of blue in the paint, complimented with a newer white top and dark blue all-vinyl interior. The car is said to have originated in New Mexico, so it shouldn’t be surprising that there is no reported or visible rust anywhere to be found. The interior shows as well as the exterior and it’s quite possible that this car has only been driven less than 900 miles a year on average (48,621 miles on the odometer). The top of the door panels may be slightly sunburned.

The seller says the car starts and drives great and moves along on newer tires. There are only a couple of minor things that should be taken care of. One of the taillights is out (why not just replace to bulb before you list it?) and the tailpipe has a small hole in it. Interested parties are welcome to come to look and drive the car unless there is snow on the ground or rock salt on the roads. We’re not sure how many of these were made. One source says that 25,200 Satellites were built in 1965, but there is no breakout by hardtop or convertible. Given a distribution of 20% ragtops, perhaps no more than 5,000 of these beauties ever left the plant. Maybe less.

Hagerty offers a price estimate for the 1965 Satellite, but it’s based on a hardtop with a small-block V8. The convertible and 383 should be higher and even still more given the extraordinary condition of this car. I, for one, will be checking back at the end of the auction to see how far this beauty was bid up!

This one looks good, but the wheels appear to be from a Ford Ranger, and (IMO) they need to be replaced with a set of Magnums to make this drop top really pop! GLWTA!! :-)

The Encyclopedia of American Cars shows production of the 65 Satellite convertible as being 1,860 with hardtops at 23,341.

I don’t believe the mileage claim. I think there is a lot of ugly hidden under the obviously cheap and rushed paint job. The 94% positive reviews on eBay is a giant red flag. An in person inspection is a must for this car.

Steve, maybe Moparman can chime in, but I believe that area behind the grille should not be body color, but blacked out. I have an article on here somewhere. This car is not as it appears.

Looks like a “Carlisle” paint job- slapped on to cover the mess underneath for a quick sale to the unknowing.

Like this, Dad had the Dodge HT, in white, rotted away in two years, IIRC.
So, this car, driver but, w/needs; ALL new rubber seals, door cards, steering wheel, seat covers, interior plastic bits, etc., etc.,,,!
And I don’t believe the mileage either.
This is 25 mi. away, might look anyway, but if someone really wants..!

3 days remain on the bidding. Don’t know where it’s headed, but if it stays reasonable. I would be willing to make the repairs you mentioned. Drivetrain and rust are my main concerns. Please let me know if you make the drive. Thanks

Nice car although with the meh color and so so condition it may not get top dollar. I prefer cars original but think I would struggle not to give it a color change. cant understand why the flipper didn’t do it since they were going to paint it anyway. I would try to find an original steering wheel to replace the Pep Boys boy racer job and lose the Tijuana upholstery but otherwise a nice cruiser for a summer evening.

Had one when I was 17. Hardtop red with black interior. Although not the rarest car out there. It’s the one I wish I had kept the most.

Nice work Mike and you are smart. I visited Euclid’s site. What a POS. Why doesn’t Ohio shut this joker down? I wouldn’t buy anything from this guy. I am sure this uni body Mopar looks like the Titantic underneath. Ohio state highway dudes dump millions of tons of salt on the roads and in the Northeast it’s been a very rough winter and there are still almost 2 months to go.

This is definitely NOT a 48k survivor. Just look at the cheap ass paintjob where they painted over the door latches, door weatherstrips, engine wiring harnesses, dirt, runs, YUCK. Then there are the clear signs of a very worn out interior, incorrect seats, cheap ass crappy poor fitting top, and the rust hole through the left rear frame rail. Just look at the photo of the power top switch and that alone tells the take of a weathered and abused car that may have even been flooded. Whoever buys this will surely be disappointed when the car hauler shows up out in front of their house.
