4X4 Projects: Trio of Dodge Ramchargers

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The Dodge Ramcharger was Chrysler’s version of the Ford Bronco or Chevy Blazer. Built from 1974 to 1993, it was based on a reduced wheelbase of the Dodge D-Series pickup. The seller has three of them to sell, two from 1974 and one from 1978. The asking prices range from $4,750 to $6,750 depending on the unit and its condition. Located in Colfax, Washington, this trio is available here on craigslist as a package deal or one at a time. An interesting tip from Mr. Jeff!

Dodge has typically been the truck arm of Chrysler Corp., but for a time Plymouth got involved by offering the Ramcharger badged as a Trail Duster in the 1970s. Most Ramchargers were built with four-wheel-drive, but you could get a two-wheel-drive version if you weren’t planning to do much off-roading. The tripod of SUVs that the seller has accumulated all look to have been well-used but share these things in common: they all come with removable tops, they each have roll bars, and all have automatic transmissions paired with 4WD setups.

1978 Ramcharger

This is the cheapest of the trio. Offered at $4,750, this once-blue vehicle wears a lot of grey primer now. It’s powered by a big-block V8, but the seller doesn’t mention its displacement. It once had factory air conditioning, but that’s MIA now. With an original (and an “experienced” interior), it’s in running condition at 100,000+ miles.

1974 Ramcharger (Orange)

Priced in the middle at $5,750, we’re told this is a desirable model as it’s from the vehicle’s first production year and has a soft top along with “no window frame” doors. This orange paint has run its course, and the rear bumper was removed but will be thrown in for good measure. It has a 360 V8 but no mention is made of its health.

1974 Ramcharger (Yellow)

Another 360 V8 SUV, this one has the best body of the group and the least amount of visible rust. The brakes have been redone and a 4-barrel carburetor added along with newer tires. Its factory A/C has also taken flight although a pump is available. For $6,750 OBO, you can take this one home. The seller mentions that extra parts are available, but no verbiage is provided of what they are or their cost.

A stick shift Ramcharger seems a rare find. The Torq-flite is so good, its somewhat understandable.

Our own Scotty G had one of these. I believe, like my 2nd gen Bronco, it has the honor of the worst gas mileage of any other vehicle. I happen to like the Chrysler offerings. I think all 3 were pretty close, I think Jeep missed the boat big time, again, whatever daddy drove, but more importantly, these changed the tide for trucks and rural mobility. No longer were 4x4s relegated to some rattly door, poor handling Power Wagon, these actually were perfect for a family in a rural setting.
Today, this is considered an antique by most, what, no chilled/heated cup holders and only ONE power port? But to many, this was just what was needed for a changing society, and never looked back,,,,yet. All these are good for today, is for a bunch of hooligans doing donuts and slinging a ton of dust in the air, firing pistols in the back 40. Hmm, sounds like fun, except the pistol part.

If I had the money and the room, definitely all three of these removable hardtop. I think the restyle of the Ramcharger was OK, but gone was the removable top. The 360 is a brute of a motor but will most likely outlast the body.

I think I sold my 1974 Ram Charger in the mid 1980’s for $2000. For as much as used FWD vehicles are selling for these 3 from the outside appears to be a fairly good deal for anyone needing / wanting a good starter project. I wish I lived a little closer I would buy any one of them.

I had a 77-78 Ramcharger 4×4 360. Worst gas milage winner for sure. Loved to drive it. So much room to move around and in the rear. Would love to get a soft top version some day down the road!!

Where the hell were these when I was in college? I wanted one & couldn’t find one to save my life! Ended up getting a CJ-7 instead.
