51k Mile 1966 Chevrolet Impala 396 Convertible

The Chevrolet Impala set a sales record in 1965 that has yet to be beaten. More than one million new cars were sold. So, it was not surprising that sales dipped in 1966 with similar cars. The seller has a survivor Impala from that second year with 51,000 original miles and a 396 cubic inch V8. But it’s not a Super Sport convertible. The seller has found himself with too many cars, so this one has to go (he’s more of a Cadillac fan). Located in Columbus, Ohio, this beefy Bow-Tie is available here on Facebook Marketplace for $36,000. Let’s give a shout-out to Zappeduster for another cool tip!

Changes made to the 1966 full-size Chevies were few. Headlights, grilles, and taillight updates are the best way to tell a ’66 from a ’65. The “she’s so fine” 409 had been replaced by the 396, which produced a minimum of 325 horsepower, though you could opt for adjustments that would add 50 more to the party. We assume the seller’s car has the more civil version of the big motor, and it’s paired with a TH-400 auto transmission per the shift indicator codes on the dash.

This Chevy may have lived in Ohio its entire life (per the paperwork the seller has from when he bought the car). He went to look at buying another Caddy and came home with this survivor Chevy instead. There is no rust on the vehicle, and the original white paint looks good for a 60-year-old automobile. The convertible top may need rear “glass,” but the Impala would look better (IMO) if the top were red like the factory interior.

The seller replaced the exhaust, which was a single that had to become a dual. And the power brake booster. Otherwise, the car is as he found it. The Chevy runs and drives and appears to need nothing else but a new domicile to call home. The car has been on the market for a few weeks without movement, so the asking price has been lowered by $3,000. Do you see yourself cruising down the boulevard in this sweet drop-top?

  1. It takes someone less than a second to make a first impression. When I first saw this, I wasn’t impressed. Dirty top, dusty paint surfaces and no back window. But this is a nice car. Very nice.
I will give the seller the benefit of the doubt, as a self professed Cadillac guy may not have the passion for this big block Chevrolet. This could be detailed and get the right money on auction sites. Or a live one. Hard to believe Scottsdale auctions are just three months away…

I’d rather have the first one. Even with the small block.
