It was way back in ’61 when Chevrolet introduced the first Impala SS, which carried on through the rest of the sixties decade, but was then absent from the lineup for the next 25 years. When the Impala Super Sport returned in 1994, it was based on the fourth-generation Caprice and included a few exterior tweaks. Chevy successfully turned a body style that often resembled a fleet car into a real beauty, and one worthy of wearing the SS badge. This 1996 Chevrolet Impala Super Sport has been under the same ownership since new, and while it could use some cosmetic work outside, this Chevy has only been driven 52,000 miles. This one’s in Middletown, Delaware, and can be found here on eBay, where the high bid is currently resting at $17,500.
There are both some positives and negatives when it comes to the body here, but fortunately, more good news than bad. The seller says this Impala SS has been garage kept, with the panels all appearing to remain reasonably solid, and I’m not spotting any obvious corrosion issues anywhere outside. Probably the biggest concerns are a few scrapes and dents here and there, although it doesn’t look like most of these would be very difficult to repair. There’s also some oxidation on the bumpers, but once the graze marks and sheet metal have all been fixed, it’ll be time for a fresh new paint job anyway.
No photos from under the hood are provided, but Chevrolet used a 5.7-liter V8 to power the 1996 Impala SS, making a period-respectable 260 horsepower. The car also borrowed some other components from the police-spec 9C1 Caprice, such as bigger brakes, extra cooling, a more heavy-duty suspension, and a limited-slip differential with 3.08 gears inside. With just over 50k miles of travel, hopefully, there’s plenty of good mechanical life left in this one for the next owner to enjoy.
Stepping into the Impala SS reveals an interior that’s as luxurious as it is sporty, and most of it remains in very nice condition here, with a small worn spot in the carpet on the driver’s side being the one flaw mentioned. The factory Stereo was replaced with an upgraded unit a few years ago, but the original radio will be included in the sale, in case the future owner would prefer to have the factory part back in the dash. This cool Chevy appears like a capable driver as it is, and also one that wouldn’t be too difficult or expensive to take up a notch or two. What are your thoughts on this particular car, and on the 1994-1996 return of the Chevrolet Impala SS?

Prefer the more elegant looking column shift. Never a fan of console automatics in 4 doors or trucks.
Cool cars. 👍 Thanks for the write up Stephens.
What is funny the column shifter always go for less money then the console shifter.
One of my favorite newer cars.
I had a black 96, stock except for a Flowmaster cat-back exhaust system, great driving car. The ebay ad states “good drivable condition” and also “original rear tires” 29 year old tires??? Drive it directly to the tire store… slowly.
I do love Chevys, but this thing still looks like a beached whale. Much rather have a Buick Roadmaster.
Great car. My buddy had one in the 90’s into the early 2000’s before he unfortunately left us while he was all too young. At the time, I personally was a Mustang GT and Crown Vic Sport/Mercury Marauder guy but wow, these were excellent daily drivers. Loved his.
