8K Mile: 1971 International Scout 800B

You wouldn’t know by looking at it but this 1971 International Harvester Scout 800B is claimed to have been driven only 8,462 miles. As a bonus, it is V8 powered. The auction here on eBay only has about 1 day remaining so you will have to act fast to get in on the bidding. The current bid is $10,800 and the reserve has been met. The Scout is located in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The International Harvester produced the Scout model from 1960 to 1980.

The first Scouts were equipped with a 152 cubic inch inline four cylinder engine that came from the factory with 93 horsepower. As the Scout evolved, later models had bigger and more power engines including a larger inline 4 cylinder, an inline 6 cylinder, a 266 cubic inch V8, a 304 cubic inch V8 engine and a 345 cubic inch V8 engine. This Scout 800B has the biggest engine available which is the 304 cubic inch V8 engine. For some trivia, did you know that International Harvester Scout offered the Scout with a Nissan built 198 cubic inch turbocharged diesel inline 6 cylinder in 1979 and 1980.

The interior on this Scout looks remarkably good for its age. The first generation Scout was called the Scout 80. It was manufactured from 1960 to 1965. The next generation of Scout was called the Scout 800 which was produced from 1966 to 1971 and came in two models – 800 A and 800B.  The Scout 800 A was produced from 1968 to 1970. The Scout 800B had a short production run from August 1970 to March 1971. It was replaced by the final generation of the Scout called the Scout II which was produced from 1971 to 1980.

The seller states that the low miles on this Scout are accounted for because it was used as a farm vehicle in Colorado. It is running and the current owner purchased it in 2018. Obviously the rockers and other areas will need rust repair and bodywork. The seller is including most of the panels needed for this work. This might be a rare opportunity to purchase a low production Scout 800B.

    Again, I’m not buying the mileage claim. 5 digit odometer, more like 108,462 miles, or they could have just unscrewed the speedometer cable like a lot of dishonest people did back in the day.

    Ha, ha, ha, ha, oh, mercy, ( wiping tear from eye) it just doesn’t stop, does it? It is kind of fun, seeing how out of whack, the stories are the best. It has 25 bids at over $10g’s,,,really. Are these people really that misinformed? If so, it’s true, you really can sell air conditioners to the Eskimoes. Rust like that doesn’t happen from sitting in a shed in Greeley, Co. I’ve seen many Scouts here, mostly dormant in back yards, with much better bodies, this is “Up North” rust. If this is actually legit, and I’m fast becoming skeptical of EVERYTHING that belches forth from this screen,( my comments exempt, of course) but if people are really spending 5 figures on rust buckets like this, that were poor driving vehicles to begin with, we’re in worse shape than I thought. Just terrible,,,

    A simple telltale sign of actual miles is often wear on the brake pedal pad. In this case that pad is obviously long gone😳

    In typical unattended scout for rust is extremely prevalent who ever buy this had better be good at a lot of body work!

    Please correct your information, the turbo Nissan was not available in 1979, only 1980. The NA Nissan diesel was was available from 1976 through 1979. 1980 was the first and only with the turbo diesel. There was also a turbo 152 4 cylinder available in the early Scout 80’s around ’64/’65.
